Gill urges India to settle World Cup combination from New Zealand series

Gill said India must finalise its ODI World Cup combination from the New Zealand series onward.

India captain Shubman Gill said the team has little time left to experiment ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. He wants the side to begin playing with its preferred combination from the next series onward, a five-match ODI tour of New Zealand.

Gill said injuries and scheduling had prevented the team from fielding its first-choice bowling attack during the West Indies series. He added that the absences gave fringe players a chance to prove themselves, but stressed the need for clarity before the World Cup.

The captain also flagged fielding lapses and uncertainty over death bowling as areas that require immediate attention. India won the three-match series 2-1 despite dropping seven catches and conceding heavily in the powerplay.

The urgency in Gill's tone reveals a captain who sees the next 12 months not as preparation time but as a final window to lock in roles before the World Cup squad is effectively set.
