Ex-India coach reveals Rohit Sharma's hip injury history

Soham Desai revealed Rohit Sharma's hip injury sustained during the 2017 Champions Trophy and the strength work required to sustain his career.

Former India strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai said Rohit Sharma suffered a career-threatening hip injury during the 2017 Champions Trophy final against Pakistan. The injury required surgeries on his hamstring and hip flexor, leaving the area around his hip vulnerable.

Desai said Rohit must complete a minimum of two strength training sessions per week to manage the risk. He dismissed criticism that Rohit is lazy or does not train hard enough, stating that without this routine the batter would not have lasted this long.

Rohit now plays only limited-overs cricket for India after retiring from Tests and T20Is. He is expected to return in India's five-match ODI series against New Zealand beginning on November 4.

CricHubb Take

Rohit's sustained output at 39 rests on a narrow physical margin that few outside the dressing room appreciate. The 2027 World Cup campaign will test whether that margin holds under the load of another full cycle.
