Wasim Jaffer backs Tilak Varma as Kohli's No. 3 replacement after 2027 World Cup
Wasim Jaffer identifies Tilak Varma's versatility and first-class average of 55 as reasons he can succeed Kohli at No. 3 after the 2027 World Cup. Tilak has played only four ODIs so far.
Former India opener Wasim Jaffer believes Tilak Varma could replace Virat Kohli at No. 3 in India's ODI batting order after the 2027 World Cup. Kohli has confirmed that the 2027 edition will be his last ODI World Cup for India. Jaffer pointed to Tilak's versatility and first-class record as reasons for his suitability.
Jaffer noted that Tilak has scored a century at No. 3 and adapted to batting at No. 5 and No. 6 in T20Is. He said Tilak's first-class average of around 55 shows he can fit into all three formats. Jaffer believes India will have a left-handed batter at No. 3 once Kohli and Rohit Sharma move on.
Tilak has played only four ODIs for India, batting twice at No. 3 and once each at No. 4 and No. 5. He has scored 68 runs at an average of 22.67. His last ODI came in December 2025 against South Africa.

India's middle order planning has shifted from finding one Kohli replacement to building depth across positions. Tilak's ability to bat anywhere from three to six gives selectors options rather than a single heir.
