Former India trainer reveals Rohit Sharma's hip injury and training demands

Soham Desai says Rohit Sharma needs two strength sessions weekly to manage a hip injury sustained in 2017.

Soham Desai, India's former strength coach, says Rohit Sharma still works around a hip problem that began in 2017. The batter had surgery on his hamstring and hip flexor after a Champions Trophy injury that threatened his career, and Desai insists the area remains vulnerable.

He wants two strength sessions every week. Without them, Desai argues, Rohit would not have kept playing all three formats for the last seven or eight years. The programme mixes strength, explosiveness and quick reactions, and it is nothing like Virat Kohli's heavier weights routine.

Rohit is due back for the five ODIs against New Zealand that start on 4 November, the first step on the road to the 2027 World Cup.

The real issue is not whether Rohit trains, but whether the workload needed to keep him fit leaves enough petrol in the tank for a 2027 campaign.
