Lance Morris will make his first competitive appearance in 20 months when Western Australia face England in a 50-over match at the WACA Ground on Saturday. The 28-year-old fast bowler has played three ODIs for Australia.

Morris underwent pars stabilisation surgery in August last year for a lumbar bone stress injury. An August side strain extended his recovery to 15 months. He bowled his first competitive overs in a T20 club match last Sunday.

Morris said his immediate goal is to return to red-ball cricket for Western Australia. He added that the surgery addressed a stress fracture that had troubled him for three years.

Morris's extended recovery highlights how lumbar injuries can derail careers even for players with modest international exposure.
