Tasmania were 45 for 7 against Queensland before Ben McDermott's unbeaten half-century steered them to a first-innings total of 187. Left-arm quick Tom Hoekstra claimed seven wickets for the visitors.

McDermott batted for more than three hours after the top order collapsed inside the first hour of play. His innings prevented Queensland from taking a massive first-innings lead on the opening day at Hobart.

The match continues on day two with Queensland yet to bat. Tasmania will need further contributions from the lower order if they are to stay in contention.
