England have appointed Stephen Fleming as their new Test head coach and confirmed Joe Root as captain following Ben Stokes' retirement. Fleming led Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles but has never held a national team head-coaching role. Marcus Trescothick stays on as interim coach for the Pakistan series; Fleming begins work afterward.
Root called the appointment a huge motivator and praised Fleming's tactical approach. The two will target the South Africa series later in the year as their first major test together.
The move closes a chapter of uncertainty in England's Test setup after Stokes stepped away from both the captaincy and the format. Fleming's IPL record — five titles with CSK — gives the ECB a coach steeped in high-pressure franchise cricket, even if he's untested at Test level.
