Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as India captain across Tests, ODIs and T20Is after leading the side to its first global title at the 2025 50-over World Cup. Smriti Mandhana, 30, was appointed her successor on Saturday.

Mandhana has already captained the team in 18 T20Is and four ODIs during her time as deputy. She recently became the leading run-scorer in women's international cricket and holds the record for most centuries across formats with 18. Harmanpreet captained India in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is.

Harmanpreet said she had given everything to the team and believed it was now in a good place for the future. Her final match in charge was the Asian Games gold-medal victory against Sri Lanka last month.

CricHubb Take

Mandhana inherits a side that has just won its first global title and now faces a compressed schedule before the 2027 Champions Trophy, with the captaincy change coinciding with the departure of the player who led the transition from Mithali Raj.
