Akash Deep returns for Irani Cup after seven-month injury layoff

The Bengal pacer returns to action after missing the IPL and international cricket due to a back injury.

Akash Deep has been named in the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup starting October 1 in Srinagar. The 29-year-old fast bowler received clearance from the Centre of Excellence after recovering from a lower-back stress fracture that sidelined him since the Ranji Trophy semi-final in March. He has not played competitive cricket since sustaining the injury while representing Bengal. Akash Deep said the six months away proved fruitful as his elder sister recovered from cancer and he got married. He also received an appointment as Deputy Superintendent of Police by the Bihar government during the layoff.
