Overton open to Ashes return if Root requests red-ball comeback

Overton leaves door open for Test return if new captain Root makes a direct approach for the 2027 Ashes.

England all-rounder Jamie Overton said he would consider returning to Test cricket for next year's Ashes if captain Joe Root asks him to make himself available. Overton has been on an indefinite break from red-ball cricket since England's 2025 home series against India.

The 32-year-old focused on limited-overs cricket after the fifth Test at The Oval, citing physical strain and a history of back stress fractures. He is part of England's squad for the ongoing one-day tri-series in Pakistan.

Overton has not ruled out a red-ball return but stressed any decision must come at the right time. He made 99 on his Test debut against New Zealand in 2022 and has two Test caps.
