Sehwag says cricket viewership has not fallen after Kohli, Rohit Test retirements

Virender Sehwag dismissed concerns that fan interest has dropped after Kohli and Rohit retired from Tests, saying viewership has actually increased with mobile access.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag said that claims of declining fan interest following Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's Test retirements are misplaced. He pointed out that similar concerns were raised after the retirements of Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar, yet audiences remained steady.

Sehwag added that more people are watching cricket now because matches are available on mobile phones rather than only on television. He acknowledged that some individual fans may stop watching when their favourite player retires, but insisted the overall audience has not declined.

Kohli and Rohit stepped away from Test cricket in May 2025 after retiring from T20Is following India's 2024 World Cup win. Shubman Gill now captains the Test side.
