Rishi Dhawan backs Shubman Gill to captain India at 2027 ODI World Cup

Former India pacer Rishi Dhawan said Shubman Gill will captain India at the 2027 ODI World Cup. Gill took over the Test captaincy in May 2025 after Rohit Sharma retired from the format and was named ODI captain in October 2025. He has led India in 15 ODIs and 11 Tests so far.

Dhawan said Gill has managed the dual responsibility of captaincy and batting without visible impact on his performances. In ODIs, India recorded eight wins and seven losses under Gill, including series victories over Afghanistan and the West Indies. In Tests, he has six wins, three losses and two draws, with India securing a home series win over the West Indies and a 2-2 draw against England.

Dhawan also backed the continued presence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI setup, citing their fitness, current form and experience as valuable assets ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
