Gill's 223 not out shows India's ODI batting has shifted to high-volume accumulation

Gill's 223 not out completed India's second 400-plus run-chase in ODI history and highlighted a deliberate shift toward aggressive accumulation.

Shubman Gill's unbeaten 223 off 133 balls in the second ODI against West Indies marked India's second successful chase of 400-plus runs in ODI history. Gill reached his hundred in 62 balls and his double century in 117, the fastest in the format. He surpassed Glenn Maxwell's 201 against Afghanistan in 2023 to claim the highest score in an ODI run-chase. The innings also stands as the third-highest individual score in ODI cricket.

India chased 406 with 6.3 overs to spare after West Indies posted 405 for seven, the first time the visitors had crossed 400 in an ODI. Rohit Sharma scored 101 as the opening pair added 255, India's second-highest opening stand in the format. Gill said he breaks innings into smaller parts and that scoring 200-odd before 25 overs put pressure back on the opposition.

Gill told reporters after the series that India missed their preferred bowling attack due to injuries and scheduling. He said there is limited time to experiment ahead of the 2027 World Cup and that the team wants to settle on its first-choice combination from the next series onward.
