25 runs — Shreyas Iyer needs 25 more to break Rohit Sharma's T20I captaincy record
Shreyas Iyer is 25 runs away from breaking Rohit Sharma's record for most runs as India T20I captain in a calendar year.
Shreyas Iyer has scored 632 runs in 22 matches as India's T20I captain in 2026. He needs 25 more runs in the second T20I against New Zealand to surpass Rohit Sharma's tally of 656 runs scored in 29 matches in 2022.
Iyer scored 42 off 28 balls in the series opener at Hagley Oval. The Punjab Kings captain also has a chance to break another record across all T20 cricket this year, needing 96 runs to go past Babar Azam's 1,225 runs as captain in 2021.
India lead the five-match series 1-0. The second T20I starts at 12:30 PM IST on Saturday at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

The record chase in Christchurch already showed Iyer's value as a finisher under pressure. Adding the calendar-year mark would confirm that his promotion to captain has not disrupted his batting rhythm.
