Ishan Kishan needs seven runs to surpass Suryakumar Yadav's Indian record of 1,164 T20I runs in a calendar year ahead of the five-match series against New Zealand that begins in Christchurch on Thursday. The wicketkeeper-batter has scored 1,158 runs in 34 innings this year at an average of 37.35 and a strike rate of 172.06.

Kishan is also 139 runs short of Mohammad Rizwan's mark of 1,326 runs set by a batter from a Test nation in 2021. He needs another 46 runs to reach 2,000 career T20I runs and become the seventh Indian to achieve the milestone.

Five T20Is against New Zealand and three against Sri Lanka in December give Kishan further opportunities before the year ends. Across all T20 cricket this year he has 1,760 runs and needs 240 more to become the first Indian to score 2,000 runs in a calendar year.

Kishan's workload management will determine whether he can convert proximity to records into the actual marks before the year closes.
