India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a strong contender to replace Ishan Kishan in the second T20I against New Zealand. Kotak told reporters on Friday that Kishan has a low-grade right adductor strain and is unlikely to play at Hagley Oval on Saturday.

Kotak said the 15-year-old would step in if the medical team confirms Kishan cannot recover in time. He added that Sooryavanshi understands the challenge of breaking into a settled side and has shown patience while waiting for his opportunity.

BCCI added uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra to the squad as cover for Kishan. India lead the series 1-0 after chasing 226 in the opener at the same venue.

Kotak's measured tone signals that Sooryavanshi's recall is not guaranteed. The teenager may warm the bench again if the medical team clears Kishan or if the team prefers Tilak Varma at number three.
