CSK overhaul continues as Michael Hussey exits batting coach role

CSK continue their backroom changes after a poor 2026 season, with Zaheer Khan now leading the rebuild.

Chennai Super Kings have parted ways with batting coach Michael Hussey ahead of IPL 2027, continuing the franchise's coaching restructure that began with the departure of Stephen Fleming after 18 years. Zaheer Khan has been appointed head coach, while Mohit Sharma has joined as bowling coach. Hussey, who won two IPL titles as a player and three more as a coach with CSK, may join another franchise for the 2027 season.

The changes follow CSK's disappointing IPL 2026 campaign in which the side finished eighth and missed the playoffs. The franchise's overhaul has been directed with input from MS Dhoni, according to reports. Suresh Raina declined to comment on speculation that he could replace Hussey as batting coach when approached at an event this week.

Hussey's exit ends a 15-year association with CSK that began when he joined as a player in 2010. His departure leaves the batting coach position open as Zaheer Khan prepares for his first season in charge of the five-time champions.

The timing of these departures suggests CSK are treating the 2026 results as a structural problem rather than a performance dip, which means the next head coach will be judged on whether he can reset selection logic, not just win more games.
