Tilak Varma stayed unbeaten on 51 from 26 balls to steer India to a four-wicket win in the second T20I against New Zealand at Christchurch. India were chasing 181 and had slumped to 70 for five when Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy stitched together an unbroken 69-run stand for the seventh wicket.

Varma took his time early on, scoring just 10 from his first nine balls before he started to accelerate. He hit six fours and one six, rotated the strike well, and left only four dot balls from his 26 deliveries. Before the match, he spoke with Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak, and their conversations left him convinced that staying till the end would win the game.

His innings broke from the usual finisher script, where the middle order is expected to launch immediately. Varma showed he can read the situation and time his attack, giving India another option for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

CricHubb Take

The real test will come when India face a stronger attack in tougher conditions — whether the same restraint still works or whether the team needs to revert to the power-hitting template.
