Banton's white-ball-only deal reflects how England players are restructuring county commitments around international and franchise schedules
Banton's decision to drop red-ball cricket shows how England white-ball players are prioritising international and franchise schedules over county first-class commitments.
Tom Banton signed a white-ball-only contract with Somerset in June after scoring 371 in a first-class match less than 18 months earlier. The 27-year-old said the packed calendar left no room for red-ball cricket alongside England duties and franchise opportunities. Banton has since returned to England's ODI and T20I sides under Harry Brook and recorded four consecutive fifty-plus scores, including his first international century. He has only 30 List A appearances and is still adjusting to the demands of opening in 50-over cricket. England face Pakistan in Lahore on Sunday needing a win to stay in contention for the tri-series final.
CricHubb Take
Banton's move is less about rejecting red-ball cricket and more about treating the county system as optional infrastructure. England players are now sequencing their careers around calendar windows rather than traditional progression routes.
