Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had managed just eight runs on his Duleep Trophy debut, so when Ishan Kishan tossed him the ball against North East Zone, the captain called it a risk. Three overs later the 15-year-old had 2 for 11 and an economy of 3.67.

Sooryavanshi recalled that Ishan had warned him the move was risky, then added that the captain didn't know he was a wicket-taker. East Zone now meet defending champions Central Zone in the semifinal.

The teenager will be in action again when East Zone take on Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Sooryavanshi's two-over spell did more than pick up wickets. It showed that the 15-year-old already treats every format as a chance to collect scalps, not just accumulate runs.
