Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has backed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to play in the second T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch. He said the teenager should replace Ishan Kishan, who sustained a low-grade right adductor strain during the first match.

Karthik said Sooryavanshi has the skill to bat at number three outside the powerplay or open the innings with Sanju Samson moving down. He added that India has three options on the bench but would tilt towards Sooryavanshi because of his talent and ability to dominate attacks.

India won the first T20I by four wickets after chasing 226. Kishan is doubtful for the second match and India have not yet named their final XI for the Hagley Oval fixture.

CricHubb Take

Karthik's preference for Sooryavanshi over a bowling option shows that India's selection group is prepared to accept short-term bowling risk in exchange for long-term batting upside.
