Jaffer backs Tilak Varma to replace Kohli at No. 3 in ODIs

Jaffer names Tilak Varma as Kohli's likely successor at No. 3.

Wasim Jaffer believes Tilak Varma should slot in at number three once Virat Kohli retires from ODIs after the 2027 World Cup. Kohli himself confirmed on Saturday that the tournament marks his final ODI World Cup.

Jaffer pointed to Tilak's ability to bat in several positions and his first-class average near 55. India, he said, will need a left-hander in Kohli's spot once the senior batters step aside.

Jaffer also noted that Abhishek Sharma has grown into the format. The batter no longer swings for a six on the first ball—an approach that shows he now understands what the longer game demands.

The choice of Tilak also hints at a future where India might open with two left-handers; if Abhishek and Tilak both lock down places, teams may need to rethink how they attack the powerplay.
