BCCI says age not a factor in Kohli, Rohit selection

BCCI president Mithun Manhas confirmed that age will not be a criterion in selecting Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

BCCI president Mithun Manhas said fitness and performance, not age, will determine whether Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are selected for the 2027 World Cup. Manhas told Sportstar that selectors and coaches make such decisions.

Manhas noted that both players bring valuable experience that would help current captain Shubman Gill. He said their presence alongside Jasprit Bumrah could distribute leadership responsibilities across batting, bowling and fielding units.

Former New Zealand assistant coach James Pamment separately urged full support for both players to decide their own futures. Kohli and Rohit retired from T20Is after India's 2024 World Cup triumph but remain active in ODIs.

Manhas's statement effectively hands Kohli and Rohit control over their retirements while shifting the burden onto selectors to justify any future omissions purely on current form and fitness rather than long-term planning.
