BCCI seeks franchise feedback on Impact Player rule ahead of IPL 2027

The BCCI is seeking franchise feedback on whether to retain the Impact Player rule for IPL 2027.

The BCCI is seeking feedback from franchises on the future of the Impact Player rule ahead of the 2027 season. The provision, introduced in IPL 2023, allows teams to substitute one player during a match depending on requirements.

Critics including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have argued that the rule has hindered the development of quality all-rounders. If scrapped, teams would need to place greater emphasis on players capable of contributing with both bat and ball when selecting starting XIs.

Naman Dhir, Shivam Dube, Rahul Tewatia, Washington Sundar and Venkatesh Iyer are among players whose secondary skills have received limited exposure under the current rule. Their value could increase if the provision is abolished.

CricHubb Take

The rule's possible removal would force franchises to value all-round utility over pure specialization, shifting auction strategies toward players who can fill multiple roles without substitution.
