Billy Root to retire from professional cricket at season end

Billy Root confirms retirement from professional cricket after seven seasons with Glamorgan and nearly 5,000 runs.

Glamorgan batter Billy Root will retire from top-flight cricket at the end of the 2026 season, following fellow long-serving teammate Colin Ingram into retirement. The 34-year-old joined the Welsh county in 2019 and scored almost 5,000 runs in 67 appearances, including seven centuries and a double century at Northampton.

Root played a key role in Glamorgan's One-Day Cup final wins in 2022 and 2024. Glamorgan director of cricket Mark Wallace praised Root's professionalism, consistency and performances in high-pressure matches.

Root has appeared in two County Championship Division One matches this season.
