Joe Root reached 23,000 international runs during England's opening ODI against Sri Lanka in Durham on Tuesday. The England batter achieved the landmark in his 521st international innings, making him the second-fastest player to the mark. Virat Kohli remains the quickest, reaching it in 490 innings.
Root needed three runs when he walked in and completed the milestone with a boundary. He becomes the first Englishman and eighth batter overall to cross 23,000 international runs, joining Tendulkar, Kohli, Dravid, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Ponting and Kallis.
Root scored 44 from 52 balls as England posted 265 before bowling Sri Lanka out for 176. Will Jacks took 5 for 22 as England won by 89 runs. Root has 14,278 Test runs and needs 1,643 more to overtake Tendulkar's record of 15,921.
