Tilak Varma rejects high-risk finisher template in Christchurch chase
Tilak Varma reveals he promised coaches he would bat deep rather than accelerate immediately, redefining the finisher role during India's four-wicket win in Christchurch.
Tilak Varma said he rejected the modern finisher template of immediate acceleration and instead took the chase deep against New Zealand in Christchurch. He reached 10 off his first nine balls at Hagley Oval before accelerating to an unbeaten 51 off 26 deliveries that carried India to a four-wicket victory.
Varma revealed he had promised coaches Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak that he would bat through the innings rather than take early risks. The left-hander cited the large ground and slower pitch as factors that made six-hitting difficult, noting that singles and twos became crucial in the middle overs before he and Nitish Kumar Reddy added 69 runs from 30 balls.
Varma and Reddy communicated in Telugu during their partnership, a detail that resonated with both players' fathers back home. The pair's approach of accumulating against spin before targeting pace bowlers delivered the decisive over that shifted momentum, allowing India to complete a record chase in the final five overs.
