India name Shreyas Iyer T20I captain and include Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar cited the 2028 T20 World Cup cycle and Iyer's experience as reasons for replacing Suryakumar Yadav.
India have appointed Shreyas Iyer as T20I captain for the upcoming series against Ireland and England. The 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi received his first national call-up after scoring 776 runs in IPL 2026 for Rajasthan Royals. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the panel selected Sooryavanshi on the strength of his record-breaking performances and expressed high hopes for the teenager. Agarkar described the move to replace Suryakumar Yadav with Iyer as the best way forward because of the need to plan for the 2028 cycle and Iyer's leadership record. The squad also includes Tilak Varma as vice-captain. Sanjay Manjrekar cautioned against exposing the 15-year-old to overseas conditions too soon after his IPL exploits.
