Padikkal vs Sudharsan: who fills India's No.3 spot

Sai Sudharsan is out of the Sri Lanka Test series with a toe stress fracture. Devdutt Padikkal scored 142 in the warm-up and's now the leading candidate for No.3.

Devdutt Padikkal

B Sai Sudharsan won't play the two-Test series against Sri Lanka — a toe stress fracture picked up during the India A tour last month has ruled him out. India's already without Jasprit Bumrah for the series.

Devdutt Padikkal made 142 not out in the warm-up against Sri Lanka XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground, then retired to give other batters time in the middle. Ravindra Jadeja contributed 63 before retiring out as India posted 357 for eight.

With Sudharsan sidelined, the No.3 spot is open — Padikkal's the obvious contender given his form in India A cricket, though selectors will also weigh Sarfaraz Khan. The series starts once the warm-up wraps.

Ash Gardner's estranged wife calls for CA to strip her of vice-captaincy

Monica Wright criticised CA for not acting and called for Gardner to lose the vice-captaincy over the alleged affair.

Monica Wright, the estranged wife of Australia vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner, demanded that Cricket Australia remove Gardner from the leadership role over an alleged affair with teammate Georgia Voll. Wright said CA's silence implies support for the conduct.

Cricket Australia responded that it considers the matter private and personal, adding that all relationships within its workforce must comply with its Respect at Work policy. Gardner has received support from her WBBL franchise, the Sydney Sixers.

Wright and Gardner married in April 2025 and separated after the relationship deteriorated during the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup. Gardner has since moved out of their Sydney home and begun divorce proceedings.

Irfan Pathan says Pakistan media ran fake Babar Azam story to defame him

Pathan said the story was fabricated using a photoshopped image and gained over a million views before being exposed.

Irfan Pathan says Pakistan media published a fake story claiming he tried to interview Babar Azam and got turned down. Someone had taken a photo of a young Bangladeshi reporter who'd been refused and stuck Pathan's face on it. The piece picked up more than a million views on social media before the lie surfaced.

He spoke about it on JioHotstar's Cheeky Singles and shrugged it off. These things happen often enough that he doesn't bother answering each one — otherwise he'd never get on with his day.

Pathan played 141 Tests between 2003 and 2012, scoring 2,821 runs at 26.12 with one hundred and eleven fifties. With the ball he took 301 wickets at 29.85, including nine five-wicket hauls. In the IPL he turned out for Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions.

Sri Lanka offers free entry for India Test series

Sri Lanka Cricket announced free entry for the two-Test series against India to boost attendance at the matches.

Sri Lanka Cricket has decided that fans won't pay to watch India play two Tests this month. Galle hosts the first from August 15, and the SSC in Colombo stages the second between August 23-27. The board made the call after years of empty stands, even when India toured. Crowds were thin again during the Lanka Premier League, so the hope is that free entry might pull people back.

Ravindra Jadeja remains India's sole link to 2015 Test core

Jadeja's longevity marks him as the last remaining member of India's 2015 Test generation.

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja is the only player from India's 2015 Test squad still active in the side ahead of the Sri Lanka series. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have all retired from Tests since that tour. Jadeja reclaimed his place later in 2015 and has since added batting depth to his left-arm spin.

Saurashtra head coach Niraj Odedra said Jadeja's mindset change was the key factor in his evolution from specialist bowler to all-round contributor. Jadeja scored a maiden Test century against West Indies in 2018 and followed it with 175 not out against Sri Lanka in Mohali. He made 63 in the recent warm-up match after being promoted to number four.

India arrived in Sri Lanka on August 3 and play the first Test in Galle on August 15. Jadeja's ability to bat anywhere from four to eight and contribute in the field continues to influence selection discussions.

Henry Pryor, the inventor of the Merlyn bowling machine, died aged 92. England used the machine in the 2005 Ashes, the first series they won in 18 years.

Pryor started work on Merlyn after he found existing machines useless while coaching in inner-city schools. The device could copy Shane Warne's spin and line, so England players could face something close to the real thing.

He licensed the design to Bola, and the first production units appeared in 2009. Pryor leaves his wife Anna and eight children.

India focus on sweep shots and footwork ahead of Sri Lanka Tests

India's batting preparations for the Sri Lanka Tests have focused on using sweep shots and footwork against spin after recent failures on turning pitches at home.

India began preparations for their two-Test series against Sri Lanka with a three-day warm-up match against SLC XI in Colombo. The batting group has been told to use the sweep shot and get down the pitch against spin, the two areas where they struggled in recent home series against New Zealand and South Africa.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir told the team they must be ready with every answer when the first Test begins on August 15. Steve Smith and Cheteshwar Pujara succeeded in Sri Lanka by using their feet to smother the turn, while Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey relied on the sweep shot.

Sri Lanka's spin attack includes left-arm spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and Dunith Wellalage, along with off-spinners Dhananjaya de Silva and Ramesh Mendis. India will face a similar trial by spin on turning pitches in Galle and Colombo.

Campbell Thompson takes 8 for 25 as Bangladesh collapse for 54 in Darwin warm-up

Hazlewood said the Darwin pitch and Bangladesh's approach in Australian conditions remain unknowns for the series.

Josh Hazlewood said Australia face several unknowns ahead of the Test series against Bangladesh, which begins in Darwin on August 13. The fast bowler noted that the Marrara Cricket Ground has not hosted a Test in 22 years, the pitch behaviour is unclear, and Bangladesh's approach in Australian conditions remains to be seen. He said plans may need to be adjusted during the game rather than relying solely on pre-match analysis. Hazlewood added that the pitch may offer less bounce and seam movement than typical Australian surfaces and could behave more like conditions in Bangladesh. The series is part of Australia's home summer but scheduled outside the usual November start.
