Nitish Kumar Reddy stresses positive mindset after injury return

Nitish Kumar Reddy said staying positive during recovery helped him return with a three-wicket haul against Afghanistan.

Nitish Kumar Reddy missed the tours of Ireland, England and Zimbabwe after picking up a side strain in June. Back in the side for the second T20I against Afghanistan, the 23-year-old all-rounder finished with 3 for 20 and was named Player of the Match.

He said the daily calls with friends and the occasional trip home helped him cope with the mental strain of rehab at the Centre of Excellence. The team management kept trusting him through the lay-off, he added, and that trust paid off.

India have already wrapped up the series with one match left.

Gambhir says Sooryavanshi must wait for India opportunity

Gautam Gambhir said Vaibhav Sooryavanshi must wait for his India opportunity behind established performers like Sanju Samson.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi

India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his next senior team chance. The teenager was left out of all three T20Is against Afghanistan despite strong domestic form. Gambhir said Sanju Samson, who scored two half-centuries in the series, remains ahead in the queue after consistent performances over two years. The coach described leaving Samson out of the preceding England series as the toughest decision of his tenure. Gambhir added that every player, regardless of age, must wait for opportunity and earn an extended run once selected.

Samson says competition with Sooryavanshi remains healthy within team

Samson says healthy internal competition with Sooryavanshi strengthens the team while external noise requires mental management.

Sanju Samson said the competition for places in India's T20I team must remain healthy within the dressing room rather than creating internal tension. He acknowledged that external noise affects players but emphasised focusing on personal performance.

Samson scored 57 off 22 balls in the second T20I against Afghanistan and said India's approach of maximising powerplay scoring has been successful. He noted that difficult selection decisions are part of maintaining a world champion team and credited the leadership group for clear communication.

Samson said all players are competitors for the outside world but remain a team playing for the country. He emphasised that the priority is winning games first before individual considerations come into play.

Srikkanth questions Sooryavanshi exclusion from Afghanistan T20Is

Srikkanth said the team management is sending wrong signals by dropping Sooryavanshi after strong performances at every level.

Former India player Krishnamachari Srikkanth has criticised the team management for dropping 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from the first two T20Is against Afghanistan. Sanju Samson opened both matches and scored 57 off 22 balls in the second, but Srikkanth said the decision to leave Sooryavanshi out sends the wrong message to young players.

Srikkanth said his wife questioned the exclusion and argued that a player who performed at every level should not be rotated in and out of the side. He added that giving both Samson and Sooryavanshi only two matches each creates uncertainty and prevents either from settling into the role.

India captain Shreyas Iyer has indicated the team may use the dead-rubber third T20I on September 17 to give bench players a look-in before the Asian Games. Sooryavanshi has been omitted from both matches in the series despite winning Player of the Series against Zimbabwe.

The IPL auction for 2027 will be held in India after three editions abroad, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said on Wednesday. The BCCI wants it back because this time the auction is small, and the board is confident it can find a venue.

The host city depends on when that venue is free — which is never easy during the heavy marriage season. Two big trades have already happened ahead of the auction: Rishabh Pant is heading back from Lucknow Super Giants to Delhi Capitals, and Kuldeep Yadav is leaving Delhi for LSG.

Pant will earn Rs 12 crore with Delhi after Lucknow paid Rs 27 crore for him. Kuldeep joins LSG for the same Rs 13.5 crore he was retained for in Delhi.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth says Abhishek Sharma should not have played first T20I against Afghanistan

Srikkanth's comments highlight the ongoing debate over India's opening combination despite Abhishek's match-winning knock.

Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth said Abhishek Sharma should not have been selected for the opening T20I against Afghanistan on the basis of recent form. Abhishek scored 82 in that match despite going six innings without a score before the series. Srikkanth argued that Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should have opened instead.

Srikkanth also praised Ishan Kishan, who scored 270 in the Duleep Trophy final and has since returned to India's T20I side. He said Kishan's consistency across formats makes him a contender for the Test team. Kishan is currently ranked number one in the ICC T20I batting standings.

Abhishek is expected to keep his place for the remaining matches of the series. India have already secured an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Leicestershire lose 27 points over pitch rating

Leicestershire have been deducted 27 points for a poor pitch rating. The Cricket Regulator upheld the charge against the club after the Grace Road surface was rated poor during their win against Glamorgan last month. The penalty includes the 19 points earned from that victory plus eight additional points as punishment.

The deduction leaves Leicestershire at the bottom of the County Championship table, 38 points from safety. Hampshire lead by 225 runs with seven wickets remaining at Grace Road, making Leicestershire's survival hopes slim. The club said it is reviewing its position and considering all available options.

Warwickshire moved to the top of the table with an eight-wicket win over Essex at Chelmsford. Manav Suthar took five for 75 for Warwickshire in the second innings. Craig Overton scored 64 not out for Somerset against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Nottinghamshire reached 148 for seven at Hove, with Brett Hutton making 59. Warwickshire held a 17-run lead over Essex after Ethan Bamber took six for 26. Kent reached 149 for seven chasing Lancashire's 161 at Canterbury.

Glamorgan and Surrey both collapsed at The Oval, with neither side reaching 140. Ian Holland claimed six for 38 for Leicestershire against Hampshire, while Mayank Agarwal scored 177 for Durham against Worcestershire at Chester-le-Street.

Romario Shepherd names Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as toughest batters faced after IPL 2026

Shepherd's assessment reflects the challenge Kohli and Sharma continue to pose even to international bowlers.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Romario Shepherd said Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are the toughest batters he has faced after the IPL 2026 season. Shepherd, who played for RCB in both title-winning seasons, made the comments while playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League. He also named West Indies teammate Shai Hope among the most difficult opponents.

Shepherd said playing alongside Kohli gives him insight into how a great player thinks and prepares. Kohli scored 675 runs for RCB in IPL 2026 at an average of 56.25. He remains the leading run-scorer in IPL history with 9,336 runs.

Shepherd has taken seven wickets in four matches in the ongoing CPL at an economy rate of 9.98.

BCCI names Vipraj Nigam as Varun Chakravarthy replacement for Asian Games

Nigam replaces Chakravarthy after the spinner suffered a side strain in the Afghanistan series.

Vipraj Nigam

Vipraj Nigam is in. The uncapped leg-spin all-rounder steps into the Asian Games squad because Varun Chakravarthy picked up a side strain while bowling his third over in the first T20I against Afghanistan. Scans showed the injury was bad enough to rule Chakravarthy out of both the continental tournament and the one-off Japan T20I.

Nitish Kumar Reddy is out of the Asian Games squad and will head straight into the ODI series against West Indies instead. Nigam, who plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, has 13 wickets from 19 matches and a strike rate just under 176 with the bat.

Men's cricket at the Asian Games starts on September 24 in Aichi-Nagoya.

'When national pride turns into arrogance, victory brings no reward' — Mohammad Yousuf

Mohammad Yousuf accused India of arrogance after the team declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi.

Former Pakistan batter Mohammad Yousuf has criticised India's decision not to accept the Women's Asia Cup trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. Yousuf posted on social media that a team may win but a nation without humility remains a loser.

India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final but stayed in the dressing room during the presentation. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board had informed Naqvi in advance of the decision. Only the Sri Lankan team collected their runners-up medals.

Naqvi handed the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu after the ceremony was delayed by nearly an hour. Yousuf's comments add to the ongoing debate over the trophy standoff.

The Women's Premier League 2027 auction will take place on October 29 in Kochi. The BCCI confirmed Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai as one of the venues for the season.

The second venue remains undecided between Vadodara's Kotambi Stadium and the new stadium in Varanasi. A BCCI operations team will assess the Varanasi venue for readiness. Brabourne Stadium will also host matches in the ICC Women's Champions Trophy 2027 scheduled for February 14 to 28.

The IPL Governing Council deferred its decision on the Impact Player rule until next month. Most franchises expressed reservations about continuing with the rule after submitting feedback to the board.

BCCI considers hosting IPL 2027 mini-auction in India

The 2027 mini-auction may return to India after three years abroad.

The BCCI is considering bringing the IPL 2027 mini-auction back to India after three successive overseas events in Abu Dhabi, Jeddah and Dubai. The matter was discussed during the IPL Governing Council meeting on September 15.

The last IPL auction held in India took place in Kochi in 2023. Franchises have reportedly expressed a preference for an Indian venue, citing logistical difficulties of travelling abroad with large delegations. The BCCI will assess hotel availability, with around 100 rooms required for the two-day event.

The IPL 2028 mega-auction could still be staged overseas. No decision has been taken on the Impact Player rule, which may be discussed again within a month.

Kapil Dev dismisses India women Asia Cup trophy snub row

Kapil Dev told reporters to play golf when asked about India women refusing the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi.

Kapil Dev was at a golf tournament in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday when he was asked about India’s women’s team refusing the Asia Cup trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. His answer: focus on golf.

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain made the remark after India beat Sri Lanka in the final at Dubai International Stadium, leaving Naqvi — also PCB chairman — standing alone on the podium. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the board had warned ACC officials in advance that India wouldn’t accept the trophy from Naqvi, a decision that follows the men’s team’s stance after the April 2025 Pahalgam attack and the public pressure against bilateral ties with Pakistan.

Naqvi later handed the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka and left without finishing the ceremony. The women’s final replayed the same scene from the men’s Asia Cup final 18 months earlier.

Ajit Agarkar to attend final selection meeting before contract ends

Ajit Agarkar faces possible end of tenure as chief selector at Wednesday's meeting.

Ajit Agarkar will chair the BCCI senior selection committee meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday. The panel will pick India's squads for the upcoming West Indies white-ball series and the Irani Cup. His contract expires on October 4 and the board has not confirmed any extension.

Agarkar was appointed chairman in July 2023 and had his contract renewed for one year in April 2026. He missed the BCCI review meeting in Mumbai on September 3 after being out of station and unable to join online. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated the meeting had been called at short notice.

The panel must finalise squads for three ODIs and three T20Is against West Indies, beginning on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram. Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha have been named as frontrunners to replace Agarkar if the board decides against an extension.

Rinku Singh is working on his bowling because he wants to stay in India's T20I side. The 28-year-old has spent the last year in and out of the team as selectors pick all-rounders for the middle order.

He has bowled off-spin at international level and wants to show he can improve. Being dropped hurts, he said, but staying positive is the only way through it.

Competition keeps rising because the IPL keeps throwing up new players every season. Rinku made it clear that you don't have to change your game just because someone else has arrived.
