John Turner retires from professional cricket at age 25

John Turner has retired from professional cricket at 25 due to a persistent stress fracture and injury concerns.

Hampshire fast bowler John Turner has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 25. The Johannesburg-born pacer cited a persistent stress fracture and injury history as reasons for ending his career.

Turner made two ODI and two T20I appearances for England during the 2024 West Indies tour, claiming three wickets. He had two years remaining on his Hampshire contract and held an ECB development contract.

Turner said the decision was among the hardest he has made, though he described his five years at Hampshire as the greatest possible experience in professional cricket. The economics and finance graduate now plans to pursue opportunities away from the game.

Australia will decide on their players' IPL 2027 participation after their five-Test tour of India, according to head coach Andrew McDonald.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald says the call on how many of their players can play the 2027 IPL will wait until after their five-Test tour of India. The schedule is heavy: 20 Tests and 14 white-ball games in the next twelve months, with the IPL window sitting between that tour and the World Test Championship final.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green and Travis Head are all on franchise lists, and Josh Inglis is with Lucknow Super Giants. McDonald made it clear the priority is managing the fast bowlers' workloads and keeping them fit through a long stretch of Test cricket.

The IPL stays an option, not a promise. Australia will look at each player's form and fitness, match by match, before making a call.

Padikkal vs Sudharsan: who fills India's No.3 spot

Sai Sudharsan is out of the Sri Lanka Test series with a toe stress fracture. Devdutt Padikkal scored 142 in the warm-up and's now the leading candidate for No.3.

Devdutt Padikkal

B Sai Sudharsan won't play the two-Test series against Sri Lanka — a toe stress fracture picked up during the India A tour last month has ruled him out. India's already without Jasprit Bumrah for the series.

Devdutt Padikkal made 142 not out in the warm-up against Sri Lanka XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground, then retired to give other batters time in the middle. Ravindra Jadeja contributed 63 before retiring out as India posted 357 for eight.

With Sudharsan sidelined, the No.3 spot is open — Padikkal's the obvious contender given his form in India A cricket, though selectors will also weigh Sarfaraz Khan. The series starts once the warm-up wraps.
