Leicestershire lose 27 points over pitch rating

Leicestershire have been deducted 27 points for a poor pitch rating. The Cricket Regulator upheld the charge against the club after the Grace Road surface was rated poor during their win against Glamorgan last month. The penalty includes the 19 points earned from that victory plus eight additional points as punishment.

The deduction leaves Leicestershire at the bottom of the County Championship table, 38 points from safety. Hampshire lead by 225 runs with seven wickets remaining at Grace Road, making Leicestershire's survival hopes slim. The club said it is reviewing its position and considering all available options.

Warwickshire moved to the top of the table with an eight-wicket win over Essex at Chelmsford. Manav Suthar took five for 75 for Warwickshire in the second innings. Craig Overton scored 64 not out for Somerset against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Nottinghamshire reached 148 for seven at Hove, with Brett Hutton making 59. Warwickshire held a 17-run lead over Essex after Ethan Bamber took six for 26. Kent reached 149 for seven chasing Lancashire's 161 at Canterbury.

Glamorgan and Surrey both collapsed at The Oval, with neither side reaching 140. Ian Holland claimed six for 38 for Leicestershire against Hampshire, while Mayank Agarwal scored 177 for Durham against Worcestershire at Chester-le-Street.

Romario Shepherd names Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as toughest batters faced after IPL 2026

Shepherd's assessment reflects the challenge Kohli and Sharma continue to pose even to international bowlers.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Romario Shepherd said Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are the toughest batters he has faced after the IPL 2026 season. Shepherd, who played for RCB in both title-winning seasons, made the comments while playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League. He also named West Indies teammate Shai Hope among the most difficult opponents.

Shepherd said playing alongside Kohli gives him insight into how a great player thinks and prepares. Kohli scored 675 runs for RCB in IPL 2026 at an average of 56.25. He remains the leading run-scorer in IPL history with 9,336 runs.

Shepherd has taken seven wickets in four matches in the ongoing CPL at an economy rate of 9.98.

BCCI names Vipraj Nigam as Varun Chakravarthy replacement for Asian Games

Nigam replaces Chakravarthy after the spinner suffered a side strain in the Afghanistan series.

Vipraj Nigam

Vipraj Nigam is in. The uncapped leg-spin all-rounder steps into the Asian Games squad because Varun Chakravarthy picked up a side strain while bowling his third over in the first T20I against Afghanistan. Scans showed the injury was bad enough to rule Chakravarthy out of both the continental tournament and the one-off Japan T20I.

Nitish Kumar Reddy is out of the Asian Games squad and will head straight into the ODI series against West Indies instead. Nigam, who plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, has 13 wickets from 19 matches and a strike rate just under 176 with the bat.

Men's cricket at the Asian Games starts on September 24 in Aichi-Nagoya.

The veteran has taken 28 wickets in the ongoing IPL season for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. With Jasprit Bumrah managing fitness concerns and Mohammed Shami out of selection, Bhuvneshwar's name has re-entered discussions ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

'When national pride turns into arrogance, victory brings no reward' — Mohammad Yousuf

Mohammad Yousuf accused India of arrogance after the team declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi.

Former Pakistan batter Mohammad Yousuf has criticised India's decision not to accept the Women's Asia Cup trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. Yousuf posted on social media that a team may win but a nation without humility remains a loser.

India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final but stayed in the dressing room during the presentation. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board had informed Naqvi in advance of the decision. Only the Sri Lankan team collected their runners-up medals.

Naqvi handed the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu after the ceremony was delayed by nearly an hour. Yousuf's comments add to the ongoing debate over the trophy standoff.

WPL 2027 auction scheduled for October 29 in Kochi; Brabourne Stadium confirmed as venue

The Women's Premier League 2027 auction will take place on October 29 in Kochi. The BCCI confirmed Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai as one of the venues for the season.

The second venue remains undecided between Vadodara's Kotambi Stadium and the new stadium in Varanasi. A BCCI operations team will assess the Varanasi venue for readiness. Brabourne Stadium will also host matches in the ICC Women's Champions Trophy 2027 scheduled for February 14 to 28.

The IPL Governing Council deferred its decision on the Impact Player rule until next month. Most franchises expressed reservations about continuing with the rule after submitting feedback to the board.

Kapil Dev dismisses India women Asia Cup trophy snub row

Kapil Dev told reporters to play golf when asked about India women refusing the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi.

Kapil Dev was at a golf tournament in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday when he was asked about India’s women’s team refusing the Asia Cup trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. His answer: focus on golf.

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain made the remark after India beat Sri Lanka in the final at Dubai International Stadium, leaving Naqvi — also PCB chairman — standing alone on the podium. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the board had warned ACC officials in advance that India wouldn’t accept the trophy from Naqvi, a decision that follows the men’s team’s stance after the April 2025 Pahalgam attack and the public pressure against bilateral ties with Pakistan.

Naqvi later handed the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka and left without finishing the ceremony. The women’s final replayed the same scene from the men’s Asia Cup final 18 months earlier.

Ajit Agarkar to attend final selection meeting before contract ends

Ajit Agarkar faces possible end of tenure as chief selector at Wednesday's meeting.

Ajit Agarkar will chair the BCCI senior selection committee meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday. The panel will pick India's squads for the upcoming West Indies white-ball series and the Irani Cup. His contract expires on October 4 and the board has not confirmed any extension.

Agarkar was appointed chairman in July 2023 and had his contract renewed for one year in April 2026. He missed the BCCI review meeting in Mumbai on September 3 after being out of station and unable to join online. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated the meeting had been called at short notice.

The panel must finalise squads for three ODIs and three T20Is against West Indies, beginning on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram. Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha have been named as frontrunners to replace Agarkar if the board decides against an extension.

IPL 2027 mini-auction returns to India after four years

IPL 2027 mini-auction moves back to India; Impact Player rule decision postponed.

The IPL Governing Council decided that the 2027 mini-auction will be held in India, ending a run of overseas venues that began after Kochi hosted the event in 2023. Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi staged the last three auctions.

Franchises raised concerns over the logistics and cost of sending delegations abroad for a smaller auction. The BCCI requires more than 100 hotel rooms for two nights, a requirement made harder by India's wedding season from October to December.

The Governing Council deferred a decision on the Impact Player rule to a meeting within a month. Most franchises oppose continuing the rule but want any change delayed until after the 2028 mega-auction when squads can be rebuilt from scratch.

Devajit Saikia confirms BCCI proposed alternative Asia Cup presentation

BCCI secretary says board suggested alternative before India declined trophy from Naqvi.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board had proposed an alternative arrangement before India's women's team declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. The team refused to appear on stage after beating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in Sunday's final.

Saikia confirmed the decision followed prior discussions with ACC officials. The players did not return to the field for the presentation, though BCCI officials presented an in-house best fielder award before leaving the dais.

The incident mirrors the men's team's refusal at the previous Asia Cup final. The trophy remains with the ACC office, and India stayed unbeaten throughout the tournament.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the Indian women's cricket team's decision not to accept the Women's Asia Cup 2026 trophy from ACC president Mohsin Naqvi is a matter for the BCCI. The team declined to appear on stage during the post-match presentation after beating Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a press briefing that the issue falls within the board's jurisdiction. India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and won the final by 72 runs after posting 183 for 5.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and vice-president Rajiv Shukla congratulated the players before the presentation ceremony. The women's team's action mirrors the men's side decision after the previous Asia Cup final.

Yuvraj Singh urges India to avoid big changes before 2027 World Cup

Yuvraj Singh warns against last-minute changes ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup, citing past failures and need for consistent game time.

Yuvraj Singh wants the selectors to leave the squad alone for the next 13 months. The former all-rounder told Cricinfo that India should pick the same players who will walk out for the 2027 ODI World Cup instead of tinkering close to the event. Last-minute reshuffles have hurt the side before, he said.

With so many T20 fixtures and fewer 50-over games, Yuvraj argued every player needs regular cricket to stay sharp. That means keeping faith in the squad through dips in form, not dropping players the moment results turn. India open their 2026-27 home season with three ODIs against West Indies on 27 September.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli sit at the heart of the current white-ball setup, and Yuvraj sees the four straight final appearances since 2023 as proof that sticking to a plan has worked.

Maddinson and Shaw named NSW captains for 2026-27

Nic Maddinson and Lachlan Shaw have been appointed captains of New South Wales across formats for 2026-27.

Nic Maddinson will captain New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield and Lachlan Shaw will lead the one-day side in 2026-27. The appointments follow Jack Edwards stepping back from captaincy duties to manage his workload. New head coach Brad Haddin announced the changes after taking over from Greg Shipperd.

Maddinson returns to the captaincy after missing the entire 2025-26 Shield season while recovering from testicular cancer. The 34-year-old previously led the Blues in six first-class matches in 2015-16 and has captained Melbourne Renegades in the BBL. Shaw, 23, takes on the one-day role after 14 List A matches.

Sean Abbott will serve as vice-captain across formats. Kurtis Patterson, who stood in during the second half of last season, will focus on his batting.

Shreyas Iyer hints Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could return for dead-rubber third T20I

Iyer's comments suggest India may experiment with their opening combination in the final match.

India captain Shreyas Iyer said the team may give opportunities to players who have not featured in the first two matches of the T20I series against Afghanistan. India have already secured the series 2-0 and will play the final match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday. Iyer said it is important for the bench players to get used to the conditions.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has not played since Sanju Samson returned to the side. The 15-year-old made his debut during India's tour of Zimbabwe and was named player of the series there. Samson responded to a poor first outing with 57 off 22 balls in the second match.

Iyer also reflected on his early results as T20I captain. India lost series to Ireland and England before winning against Afghanistan. He said maintaining balance and enjoying the moment are key to handling the fluctuations of captaincy.

Samson scored his runs at a strike rate of 181.59, the highest among the five openers on the list. Rohit Sharma leads the list with 3,750 runs in 125 matches as an opener.

Samson reached his fourth T20I fifty of 2026 in just 20 balls during the innings that helped India chase down 160 with seven wickets in hand.

Selectors to discuss Ravindra Jadeja's ODI return amid Axar Patel's Asian Games duty

Rishabh Pant may also get another opportunity with Ishan Kishan at the Asian Games.

India's selectors are expected to spend considerable time on Wednesday discussing whether to bring back Ravindra Jadeja for the three-match ODI series against West Indies starting 27 September. Axar Patel will be on Asian Games duty, leaving a gap in the spin-bowling all-rounder slot.

The team management and selectors want to move on from Jadeja, but with Axar's unavailability and Harsh Dubey injured, the selectors may consider Jadeja for ODIs. Jadeja's bowling in white-ball cricket has not been up to the mark for a while, according to a BCCI source.

The selectors are also expected to decide on the second wicketkeeper, with KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya's availability also a factor. Rishabh Pant may get another opportunity in ODIs since Ishan Kishan will be at the Asian Games.

Nitish Kumar Reddy said he always wanted to become the greatest all-rounder after claiming 3 for 24 in India's seven-wicket win over Afghanistan in the second T20I on Tuesday. The 23-year-old was named Player of the Match for his bowling effort that helped restrict Afghanistan to 159 for 8.

Reddy said the work put in during his rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence had left him feeling confident about his fitness. He added that the additional pace he has developed is part of a larger ambition to establish himself as a complete all-rounder.

His performance came after Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out of the remainder of the series with a side strain. Reddy responded by making a decisive impact in the middle overs, where his three breakthroughs helped prevent Afghanistan from converting a steady start into a bigger total.
