Jaiswal available for Mumbai's Ranji opener against Chandigarh

Jaiswal's availability gives Mumbai a boost before he leaves for India's tour of New Zealand after the first game.

Yashasvi Jaiswal will feature for Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy opener against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday before heading to New Zealand for India's Test tour. Mumbai captain Siddhesh Lad confirmed that Jaiswal has been practising wicketkeeping and leg-spin during the break between commitments. The 10 overs Jaiswal has kept wicket in practice matches represent a new dimension to his game.

Mumbai will be without Shardul Thakur, who has a fractured right middle finger, and will rely on Tushar Deshpande to lead the pace attack. The batting line-up features Sarfaraz Khan and his younger brother Musheer, both eager to begin the season among the runs. Ayush Mhatre serves as vice-captain and is being groomed for a future leadership role.

Chandigarh coach Vinayak Samant returns to the Wankhede where he previously worked with Lad during the 2018-19 season. The visitors face a significant challenge against a Mumbai side accustomed to the venue's demands and the weight of its history.

SA20 generated $406 million for South African economy in latest season

SA20's economic contribution reached $406 million with 9,470 jobs created, while 22 of 34 matches sold out during the latest season.

SA20 chief operating officer Lynn Naude said the league's fourth season generated $406 million for South Africa's gross domestic product, a 23 per cent increase from the previous year. The competition created or sustained 9,470 annualised jobs according to an independent economic impact assessment.

Twenty-two of the 34 matches in the December 2025 to January 2026 season sold out across the six franchise venues. Naude said the league's significance extends beyond commercial performance to include returning spectators to cricket grounds and creating opportunities for young professionals.

Naude joined SA20 after working at the ICC and said building the competition from the ground up required managing regulations, player recruitment, commercial partnerships and event operations across the full calendar year rather than just the tournament window.

Liton Das returns as captain for the tri-series after injury, with Aliss Al Islam earning a maiden ODI call-up.

Liton Das will captain Bangladesh in the upcoming ODI tri-series in the United Arab Emirates after recovering from a calf injury. The Bangladesh Cricket Board named a 16-member squad on Saturday for the tournament that begins on October 17 and also features Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud returns to the squad, but express pacer Nahid Rana was omitted as he continues to recover from a side strain.

Bangladesh open the tournament against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi on October 17 before facing Afghanistan on October 21. The top two sides advance to the final on October 23. Zimbabwe named Sikandar Raza as captain, with Tafadzwa Tsiga and Vincent Masekesa replacing Innocent Kaia and Graeme Cremer.

Why does Chahal want bowling machines on T20 pitches?

Chahal said flat pitches, dew and the Impact Player rule have made T20 cricket a batting-only spectacle and jokingly suggested teams install bowling machines.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal watched West Indies chase 250 in Ranchi and decided something had to give. Flat pitches, dew, small boundaries and the Impact Player rule have handed batters an edge that keeps growing, he said. Powerplay totals that once felt ambitious are now routine, and sides are chasing 260 in 19 overs in the IPL.

Chahal’s fix was blunt: if bowlers keep getting nothing, teams might as well wheel out bowling machines. India have one more chance to test a different approach when they take the field in Indore on Sunday.

'Just install a bowling machine' — Chahal on flat pitches

Chahal said conditions leave bowlers with limited options and jokingly suggested teams might as well use bowling machines.

India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal said flat pitches and smaller boundaries are making it increasingly difficult for bowlers to compete in T20 cricket. Chahal spoke after West Indies chased down India's 249 for five in 18.3 overs in the second T20I in Ranchi.

Chahal noted that dew and the Impact Player rule compound the problem, with powerplay scores of 70 to 80 runs now common. He said either pitches need to offer something for bowlers or teams might as well install bowling machines.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has made similar comments about the need for a fair contest between bat and ball. The third T20I takes place on Sunday in Indore, where boundaries are shorter than at Ranchi.

Ayush Badoni wants to convert half-centuries into big scores as Delhi captain

Badoni aims to convert starts into big scores and set an example for Delhi's young batting unit after the seven-time champions missed the knockouts for eight straight seasons.

Delhi captain Ayush Badoni said he wants to put a price on his wicket and convert half-centuries into substantial scores after being named to lead the side in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy. The 26-year-old has scored four centuries and 10 half-centuries in 38 first-class innings at an average of 54.

Badoni said he has occasionally thrown his wicket away with flamboyant shots and now wants to make bowlers earn his dismissal. Delhi have not reached the knockout stages since the 2017-18 season and finished second-last in their group last year after failing to win a match.

The side open their campaign against Bengal in Kalyani on October 11. Badoni acknowledged that injuries have affected the bowling attack but expressed hope that the unit has evolved and will take more wickets this season.

Josh Inglis to rejoin Australia squad ahead of second Test

Inglis will rejoin Australia's Test squad after scans ruled out surgery on his fractured finger, though his availability depends on fitness.

Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis will rejoin Australia's Test squad in Gqeberha after recovering from a fractured finger. Inglis sustained the injury while keeping during the first ODI in Durban on September 24 and returned home for assessment.

A scan cleared him of the need for surgery, and his availability for selection will depend on how the finger holds up before the match. All five of his previous Test appearances have come as a specialist batter rather than behind the stumps. Australia added Sam Harper and Nic Maddinson to the touring party to cover for his absence.

Head coach Andrew McDonald said replacing Inglis required two players to fill the batting and wicketkeeping roles. Cameron Green remains doubtful for the second Test after sustaining an abdominal injury during the final ODI in Potchefstroom.

Axar more vulnerable than Kuldeep when attacked from ball one

Stats and match figures suggest Axar struggles more than Kuldeep when batters attack from the first ball.

Axar Patel conceded 63 runs in 3.3 overs in the second T20I in Ranchi while Kuldeep Yadav took one for 53 in four overs. West Indies chased 250 with six wickets in hand.

Axar relies on line, length and subtle pace variations but lacks sharp turn. When batters attack immediately, his defensive lengths become hittable and his economy rises sharply.

Kuldeep has taken 98 wickets in 56 T20Is at an economy rate of 7.10. Axar has 111 wickets in 109 T20Is at 7.56. Kuldeep's strike rate of 11.9 is also better than Axar's 17.8.

Gautam Gambhir says only openers are permanent in India's T20 batting order

Gautam Gambhir said India's T20 batting order will remain flexible and only the openers' positions are permanent after Shivam Dube's promotion to number four backfired in Ranchi.

Shivam Dube

India head coach Gautam Gambhir said only the openers' positions are fixed in T20 cricket and the rest of the batting order will remain flexible. Gambhir defended the decision to promote Shivam Dube to number four in the second T20I against West Indies in Ranchi.

Dube scored 7 off 10 balls before being dismissed by Roston Chase. Gambhir said India has used Dube in that position for a long time, including during the World Cup. He added that international cricket brings mixed outcomes and the team must keep improving.

West Indies chased down India's 249 for five with six wickets and nine balls to spare. The third T20I is scheduled for Indore on 11 October.

Spencer Johnson eyes injury-free run after starring for Australia A

Spencer Johnson wants an injury-free stretch after leading Australia A's bowling effort against India A.

Spencer Johnson stepped up with the ball once Mahli Beardman was rested for the second one-dayer against India A in Puducherry. The left-arm pacer helped Australia A seal the series and said he’s after an uninterrupted run of cricket after missing time with a back stress fracture.

Johnson took a sharp catch to send back Ruturaj Gaikwad, his CSK captain, and said the wicket meant more than his bowling figures. He liked the conditions for short and back-of-length bowling and noted the rotation of bowlers helped manage the heat.

Johnson signed for CSK as an injury replacement in the 2026 IPL but has yet to get through a full season without interruption.

Gambhir tells Mayank Yadav to bowl at full pace

India head coach Gautam Gambhir told Mayank Yadav to bowl at his natural pace after the fast bowler took three wickets in three overs against West Indies in Ranchi. Mayank dismissed Kamil Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell with deliveries clocked at 143.6 kmph, 144.5 kmph and 149.5 kmph respectively.

Gambhir said a fast bowler has a duty to bowl fast and that Mayank succeeded because he trusted his pace instead of experimenting with slower deliveries. The coach added that bowlers' careers are at stake and that India wants an even contest between bat and ball. Mayank dropped a regulation catch of Sherfane Rutherford during the chase.

Mayank has three matches left in the series to stake a claim for a permanent spot before India tours New Zealand in November. He returned to the side after a two-year injury layoff that limited him to seven competitive matches between 2024 and 2026.

Abhimanyu Easwaran said he continues to pursue an India Test debut as Bengal open their Ranji Trophy 2026-27 campaign against Delhi on Sunday. The 31-year-old Bengal captain has accumulated first-class runs for more than a decade and earned call-ups for the 2024 home series against England and the subsequent Australia tour without securing a cap.

Easwaran told Hindustan Times that he focuses on the task in front of him rather than selection speculation. He said he aims to improve his scoring options across different surfaces and bowlers while leading Bengal, who reached the final in 2019-20 and 2022-23 but lost both times to Saurashtra.

The 92nd Ranji Trophy season begins on 11 October with 19 matches across Elite and Plate groups. Star Sports Khel will televise the Jammu and Kashmir versus Madhya Pradesh opener, while selected matches will stream on JioHotstar.

Shedge came into the squad as a replacement for Hardik Pandya and has been India A's best player in the series. He found a place in the squad only due to the injury and raised his second List-A fifty to help the team prevent a clean sweep.

Gurjapneet Singh took three wickets as India A bundled out Australia A after the visitors had reached 177 for three. The pacers picked the last seven wickets for just 49 runs as the required run rate forced the lower order into big shots.

Essex end Robin Das contract after court appearance

Essex ended Robin Das's contract after the batter appeared in court over rape charges; the club said the move was separate from ongoing legal proceedings.

Essex County Cricket Club ended batter Robin Das's contract after he appeared in court on Friday over two rape charges. The 24-year-old, who has Bangladeshi origin, was charged in July and remains on conditional bail ahead of a trial scheduled for January 2028.

The Metropolitan Police arrested Das in August 2025 following reports of a woman being raped in Brixton in March 2024. Das made one first-team appearance for Essex in 2026, scoring 29 runs against Middlesex in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup. The club said the contract decision followed his suspension and inability to fulfil playing commitments.

Essex stated the decision was separate from the legal proceedings and confirmed it maintains robust safeguarding procedures in line with ECB and PCA guidelines.
