Wasim Jaffer says India must change approach on difficult pitches after Japan scare

Wasim Jaffer called for a change in mindset after India scraped past Japan by two runs on a turning pitch.

Wasim Jaffer said India must adjust their batting approach on non-flat pitches after the side nearly lost to Japan in their first T20I meeting. India scored 32 for four in a rain-shortened five-over match before holding on to win by two runs.

Jaffer said Indian batters get stuck when the ball seams or turns and try to maintain the same strike rate and aggression regardless of conditions. He added that the close result against Japan would have been a major embarrassment had India lost.

The former India opener also urged curators to avoid rank turners at home. He said such pitches put pressure on batters who now play far more white-ball cricket and have less red-ball practice.

Gautam Gambhir said India is approaching a settled Test batting lineup across conditions. The head coach cited the performances of Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel as signs that younger players are filling gaps left by retirees.

Gambhir said openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul are settled. He added that Padikkal has performed well in Sri Lanka while Jurel scored a hundred. Gambhir noted that Test cricket requires stable selections rather than horses-for-courses changes.

India will play two Tests in New Zealand before hosting Australia for a five-match home series. Gambhir said the bowling attack can take 20 wickets in any conditions if the batters put runs on the board.

Umpire overturned wide decision after India protest in Japan T20I

India successfully appealed a wide call during their rain-shortened T20I against Japan in Sano.

Rain cut the India versus Japan T20I in Sano to five overs a side. Alexander Shirai-Patmore went for a reverse sweep off Axar Patel, missed, and the on-field umpire Chris Thurgate called wide. Axar and captain Shreyas Iyer immediately protested, saying the batter had changed his stance. Leg umpire Chris Brown stepped in, Thurgate had another look, and the call was reversed.

India hung on to win by two runs, defending 33. Under MCC Law 22.4.1 the ball isn't a wide if the striker's movement brings it within reach of a normal stroke, and the ICC treats both sides as the off side for switch hits.

Will Jacks takes career-best 5 for 22 weeks after appendix surgery

Will Jacks claimed 5 for 22 days after returning from emergency appendix surgery, helping England to an 89-run win.

Will Jacks

Will Jacks took five for 22 on his return to England duty after emergency appendix surgery last month. The 27-year-old all-rounder also scored an unbeaten 46 as England beat Sri Lanka by 89 runs in the first ODI at Chester-le-Street.

Jacks said the operation left him short of core strength and that he bowled only five days before the preceding T20 series. He was given a four-week recovery period but returned early to captain the Lions and then played all three T20Is before the ODI.

His figures are the second-best by an England spinner in ODIs. Jacks has been named vice-captain for the Sri Lanka series in Jacob Bethell's absence and is now established as the side's middle-order finisher.
