Jadeja needs one wicket to pass Walsh in India-West Indies ODIs

Ravindra Jadeja can break Courtney Walsh's record for most wickets in India-West Indies ODIs with one scalp on Sunday.

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja will become the highest wicket-taker in ODIs between India and West Indies if he takes one wicket in Sunday's series opener. He currently shares the record with Courtney Walsh on 44 wickets, having achieved the tally in 32 matches compared to Walsh's 38.

Jadeja has not played an ODI since January 2026 against New Zealand. He needs 95 runs across the three-match series to reach 3,000 ODI runs and would become only the second Indian after Kapil Dev to complete 3,000 runs and 200 wickets in the format.

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said experience is something you cannot beat and backed Jadeja's all-round value ahead of the series. The first ODI will be played at Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.

Tom Lammonby scored his first County Championship century of the season as Somerset reached 222 for three against Surrey at Taunton. The left-hander remained unbeaten on 103 off 217 balls while Tom Abell contributed an unbeaten 63.

Abell became only the third Division One batter to pass 1,000 runs this season. Somerset trail Surrey by 200 runs after the visitors extended their first innings to 422 all out with Dan Lawrence scoring 139.

Somerset's title hopes appear over with Warwickshire well placed to secure the draw they need against Leicestershire. Surrey's attack was weakened by the absence of Rahul Chahar due to a back problem and Dan Lawrence who was called up by England.

Emilio Gay scores 141 as Durham reach 300 against Lancashire

Gay's 141 helped Durham past 300 on day one at Old Trafford.

Emilio Gay scored 141 on his return to first-class cricket for Durham at Old Trafford. The England opener shared a 124-run stand with Ben McKinney and later batted with Mayank Agarwal as the Division Two champions passed 300 on the first day against Lancashire.

Gay reached his hundred off 156 balls before Walkden dismissed him in the evening session. Durham already hold the Division Two title and promotion for next season. Lancashire, without a Championship win since April, face a fight to avoid the bottom of the table.

Gay's last first-class century came before his England call-up earlier this summer. He played all six Tests but lost form after two fifties and now faces competition from Jacob Bethell and Jordan Cox for a place in the tour of South Africa.

National team players to miss early rounds of NCL

BCB confirms national cricketers will miss early rounds of the NCL due to international commitments.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board announced all eight squads for the National Cricket League 2026-27 on Friday. Current national team players have been excluded because the T20 side is competing at the Asian Games until October 3. Test players selected for the one-off match against Afghanistan in the UAE have also been left out.

The NCL begins on October 3 and runs until November 17. National players are expected to feature in only one or two rounds at most, with the majority likely to return for the third and fourth rounds in mid-to-late October. Rangpur Division, the defending champions, open against Dhaka Division at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

Bangladesh face a packed schedule that includes the Afghanistan Test, a tri-series with Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, a two-Test series against the West Indies and a full tour of South Africa starting in November.

Gill treats Rohit and Kohli as functional assets

Gill's decisions show he views Kohli and Rohit as assets whose places depend on output, not status.

Rohit Sharma

Shubman Gill's captaincy has already begun to reshape India's middle-order selection by treating Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as current contributors rather than legacy figures. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed Gill suffered only a minor elbow blow in Friday's nets and will be available for the first ODI against the West Indies on Sunday.

India's probable XI shows Ruturaj Gaikwad at number four and KL Rahul keeping wicket, with Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy filling the all-rounder spots. The absence of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer has forced the selectors to promote players who must now perform without the safety net of established stars.

Gill's approach places the onus on results over reputation. He has already enforced a follow-on in a Test and shouldered blame for series losses in England, signalling that past achievements will not shield underperformers as India prepares for the 2027 World Cup.

Gill's captaincy quietly repositions Rohit and Kohli as senior professionals

Shubman Gill is treating Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as senior professionals whose input is valued but whose places are not guaranteed.

Virat Kohli

Shubman Gill doesn't treat Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as untouchables. He asks for their views in team meetings, then decides on batting order and selection himself.

He's backed those calls with quiet conviction and takes the heat when India lose. The approach marks a shift: India head into the West Indies series without Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, and Gill is already planning around a side that won't rely on the two veterans as cornerstones.

Shubman Gill cleared to play first ODI after elbow blow in nets

Shubman Gill receives treatment after being struck on the elbow by Mohammed Siraj but is cleared to lead India in Sunday's first ODI against West Indies.

India captain Shubman Gill has been cleared to play the first ODI against West Indies after suffering a blow to his right elbow during a nets session in Thiruvananthapuram. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed Gill is fit and ready following treatment that lasted nearly 20 minutes on Friday. Gill returned to face throwdowns before the session ended.

The incident occurred two days before the opening match at the Greenfield International Stadium. Gill has a history of fitness interruptions since 2023, including dengue, neck and toe injuries. Yashasvi Jaiswal remains available as a replacement opener if required.

Kotak also addressed selection pressure on Jaiswal, saying competition within the squad means only one player can feature even when multiple options perform. KL Rahul has been named vice-captain for the series in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is leading India's T20I side at the Asian Games.

Zaheer Khan: Replacing Fleming carries huge responsibility at CSK

Zaheer Khan said replacing Stephen Fleming at Chennai Super Kings carries huge responsibility and that the former coach's consistency and camaraderie with MS Dhoni were special. The former India fast bowler was appointed head coach on a one-year contract earlier this week after Fleming stepped down following three playoff exits.

Zaheer previously served as Mumbai Indians' director of cricket operations and as Lucknow Super Giants mentor. In his first comments after joining, he said the onboarding process was straightforward in typical CSK fashion after a conversation with owners and CEO. He noted that Dhoni has been a great force in shaping the team's direction.

A lot of processes are already in place at the settled franchise. Zaheer is expected to attend the IPL 2027 mini-auction in December as the five-time champions look to rebuild after finishing eighth in IPL 2026.

The Supreme Court has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India and all state cricket associations why they should not be governed by the National Sports Governance Act, 2025. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana made the observation while hearing applications filed by cricket bodies.

The bench also asked advocates for the BCCI and state associations to take instructions on why the terms and conditions of service of their office bearers should not be governed by the 2025 Act. The apex court has been dealing with a plea concerning the BCCI since 2014.

The top court had earlier constituted a committee headed by former Chief Justice of India R M Lodha to suggest reform measures, including framing of a constitution for the BCCI.

India pacers average 32.1 after 34 overs since ICC rule change

India pacers average 32.1 with the old ball after the ICC's July 2025 rule change, reversing prior gains in overs 35-50.

India's fast bowlers have recorded an average of 32.1 and an economy of 7.9 in overs 35-50 since the ICC introduced a single-ball rule on July 2 2025. The figures mark a reversal from their pre-rule averages of 23.5 and 6.9 in the same phase. Data from 15 ODIs show India's seamers have taken 27 wickets without establishing a settled attack.

The ICC change limits teams to one ball after the 34th over to encourage reverse swing. While pacers from the other top-10 ODI sides improved their economy from 7.5 to 7.2 in the phase, India's group has declined. Nine seamers have been used, with Prasidh Krishna leading the wicket tally at eight but conceding 8.78 runs per over.

India face the West Indies in a three-match ODI series beginning on 27 September. The tour forms part of their preparation for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.

Daren Sammy challenges West Indies to end 24-year wait for series win in India

Daren Sammy says West Indies must beat India to win major ICC events and test their ODI progress.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said the upcoming three-match ODI series against India offers his team a chance to end a 24-year wait for a bilateral series victory in India. The series begins in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. Sammy said beating India at home would provide a benchmark for West Indies' progress ahead of the 2027 World Cup qualifiers.

Sammy said winning a major ICC event requires beating India and the series gives his players an opportunity to measure themselves in the 50-over format. West Indies missed automatic qualification for the 2027 tournament and will need to navigate the qualifiers in February. The coach noted that multiple players have scored ODI hundreds alongside Shai Hope.

Sammy also highlighted the emergence of wrist-spinner Vitel Lawes, who took eight wickets in his first five ODIs. Alzarri Joseph returns after helping Antigua win the CPL title.
