County awards recognise Norton hat-trick and Bamber wicket haul

Glamorgan teenager and Warwickshire seamer among recipients in county season awards.

Tom Norton took a hat-trick on his Glamorgan debut in May before a stress fracture ended his season. The 18-year-old's early impact helped Glamorgan survive their first year back in Division One despite his August injury.

Ethan Bamber claimed 69 Championship wickets to finish as the competition's leading wicket-taker. The Warwickshire bowler received praise from captain Ed Barnard as cricket's nicest man and from Sam Hain as its hardest worker. Bamber spoke modestly about his ceiling as an average cricketer given space to express himself.

Somerset finished as runners-up for the seventh time this century after leading the table into the penultimate round. Kent won promotion from Division Two after a poor start prompted coach Adam Hollioake to restrict social media access for players.

Supreme Court allows Rajasthan election but bars result announcement

The Supreme Court let the Rajasthan Cricket Association election run but stopped the announcement of results over zero female representation.

The Supreme Court permitted the Rajasthan Cricket Association election to proceed on September 29 but directed that results must not be declared. Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana issued the order after a former women's cricketer filed a petition noting that the voter roll contained no female voters and no woman candidate.

The court asked the Rajasthan High Court to decide the pending plea on the election and noted that an administrator appointed in July remains in charge of all district associations. The petition had sought a stay on the entire process.

The bench also asked the BCCI and state associations why they should not fall under the National Sports Governance Act 2025 for service conditions of office bearers.

Irfan Pathan recalls street cricket and World Cup wins with brother Yusuf

Irfan Pathan said representing India and winning World Cups with brother Yusuf was the highlight of his career.

Irfan Pathan said the chance to represent India and win a World Cup remained the highlight of his career. The former all-rounder spoke at NDTV YUVA 2026 and said he and his brother Yusuf were fortunate to play for India at the global level. Aakash Chopra questions Parthiv Patel's potential BCCI role

Aakash Chopra questioned Parthiv Patel about his potential move from commentary to BCCI selection committee chairman.

Former India batter Aakash Chopra poked fun at Parthiv Patel amid reports that the ex-wicketkeeper is the leading candidate to replace Ajit Agarkar as the chairman of the selection committee. Parthiv is currently enjoying his stint as a commentator after previous coaching experience.

In a video shared by Star Sports, Chopra asked Parthiv which role, past, present or even future, he enjoys the most. Chopra's remark came amid Parthiv's rumoured move to the helm at the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Parthiv suggested that he believes in the present instead of focusing on what the future holds.

Leicestershire have eight points returned from 27-point pitch penalty

Leicestershire regained eight points from their 27-point penalty but remain in the relegation zone with one round left.

Leicestershire had eight points reinstated after the Cricket Discipline Panel reduced their original 27-point deduction for a poor pitch in August's County Championship win over Glamorgan. The amended penalty leaves the county with a 19-point deduction from the match they won by 42 runs. An additional eight-point suspended deduction and a £5,000 fine remain in place.

The Foxes were relegated from Division One last week after an innings defeat by Warwickshire. Their points total now stands at 119, 17 behind third-from-bottom Essex with one round remaining. A successful appeal would lift Leicestershire above the relegation zone.

Leicestershire chief executive Emma White said the club's position on the charge is unchanged. She said the county still intends to appeal, focusing on the process and evidential position. The original sanction followed a breach of ECB pitch regulations after filming of a Bollywood film prevented the pitch from being covered for eight hours.

Sunil Gavaskar warns next BCCI chief selector of scrutiny

Gavaskar warns that the next BCCI chief selector will face intense public criticism regardless of past playing achievements.

Ajit Agarkar's tenure as BCCI chief selector ends on October 4. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board will announce its next course of action after that date. Agarkar took charge in July 2023 and oversaw India's ODI World Cup final appearance, two T20 World Cup wins, the Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy. His term also saw the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, plus the sidelining of Mohammed Shami.

Sunil Gavaskar wrote that the next chairman will likely come from the West Zone under the zonal selection system. He noted that the chairman often takes the blame for decisions forced by other selectors and warned that one error will outweigh nine good calls once the term ends. Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha are the reported front-runners for the role.

Gavaskar added that the teams for India's New Zealand tour in October will be picked by the new selector.

Kagiso Rabada named in South Africa's preliminary squad for Australia Tests

South Africa included Kagiso Rabada in their 18-member preliminary squad for the three-Test home series against Australia despite the pacer's ongoing recovery from a hamstring injury. Rabada missed the ongoing ODI series against Australia and will be assessed during an intra-squad match next week.

Head coach Shukri Conrad said the final decision on Rabada's availability for the October 9 series opener in Durban will be made after the practice game. Conrad added that the team does not want to take a call based on desperation.

Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka and Ottneil Baartman were not considered due to their own hamstring issues. Anrich Nortje returns to the Test squad after his last appearance in March 2023, while Gerald Coetzee, Corbin Bosch, Wiaan Mulder and Dane Paterson complete the pace options.

Nathan Ellis and Joel Davies ruled out of Australia tour

Australia lost Nathan Ellis to a side strain and Joel Davies to a hamstring injury ahead of the final ODI against South Africa. Jack Edwards is also being monitored for a hamstring issue.

Nathan Ellis

Australia suffered two more soft-tissue injuries on their African tour ahead of the final ODI against South Africa. Fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been ruled out with a left side strain after bowling four overs during the second ODI in Johannesburg, while left-arm spinner Joel Davies will return home after sustaining a right hamstring injury while fielding as a substitute.

Ellis will return to Australia for further assessment and rehabilitation, with the hope of recovering in time for the home ODI series against England beginning on November 13. Davies will undergo rehabilitation before resuming domestic cricket with New South Wales. Ellis claimed 22 wickets in ODIs this year at an average of 17.22, second only to two bowlers globally.

Jack Edwards is being monitored for a hamstring concern but travelled with the squad to Potchefstroom. Australia will have only 12 fit players available if Edwards cannot play the dead-rubber ODI. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are expected to return unless selectors give Josh Hazlewood a third consecutive match.

Leicestershire regain eight points but stay in relegation danger

Leicestershire regained eight points from their pitch breach penalty but remain 17 points from safety with their appeal pending.

Leicestershire had eight points of their 27-point County Championship deduction reinstated but their Division One status remains in limbo. The original penalty for breaching pitch regulations in their August win against Glamorgan was announced on September 16. The Cricket Regulator raised whether the 19-point penalty imposed under playing conditions had been considered when the original decision was made.

The Cricket Discipline Panel applied an additional eight-point deduction, a further eight-point penalty suspended for a year, plus a £5,000 fine. The latter two sanctions remain part of the amended decision but the eight-point deduction for this season has been waived. Without the 27 points being docked, Leicestershire would have finished two points above the relegation zone.

After the eight-point reinstatement but with the 19-point penalty still in place, the Foxes are 17 points behind Essex. Leicestershire will be relegated if their appeal is unsuccessful. The club stated their position remains unchanged after the amendment.
