Shubman Gill cleared for Sri Lanka Tests after finger injury precaution

India captain Shubman Gill is available for the first Test against Sri Lanka after missing the opening two days of the warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI as a precaution. Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during practice on Thursday. Gill returned to batting on the final day of the warm-up and scored 44 runs while opening the innings. He had a lengthy practice session in the nets before batting in India's chase of 207. Bahutule said Gill takes his preparation very seriously and understands the demands of the particular series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 32 after a run-out mix-up with KL Rahul on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Rahul drove a flighted delivery from Keshara Nuwantha towards mid-on and called for a single. Rahul made his ground first, leaving Jaiswal short of the crease. Niroshan Dickwella removed the bails after consulting captain Dhananjaya de Silva. Jaiswal had struck five fours before the unusual dismissal. India won the toss and elected to bat first in their 600th Test match.

India batting coach praises warm-up match over extra net sessions

Kotak values the match simulation over extended net sessions ahead of the Galle Test.

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said the three-day warm-up match in Colombo was more productive than additional net sessions would have been. All available players batted and bowlers delivered between 18 and 20 overs each during the fixture, which India won by six wickets. Mohammed Siraj hit a hat-trick of sixes to seal the result.

Kotak noted that the match gave bowlers the intensity required and allowed everyone to face match situations. India had previously favoured high-intensity training camps over warm-up matches on several overseas tours. The current schedule allowed four days between arrival on August 3 and the first Test on August 15.

The team arrived in Sri Lanka with extra time compared to recent tours. Kotak said the match provided better preparation than four additional days of net practice alone.

Sir Garry Sobers played for Norton in English league cricket

Garry Sobers represented Norton in league cricket when county opportunities were limited for overseas players.

Sir Garry Sobers played for Norton Cricket Club in the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire League during the summers of 1964, 1965 and 1967 because overseas players could not easily join county sides at the time. His brother Gerry kept wicket for the club, and fast bowler Wes Hall also appeared as a guest.

Sobers toured England with the West Indies in 1963 and 1966. A local player recalled one of his sixes landing in the car park, which discouraged spectators from parking there during matches.

Sobers was described as approachable as he was gifted during his time at the club.

Kagiso Rabada says South Africa aren't carrying any extra weight because the 2027 ODI World Cup lands at home. They've been reaching finals and semis across formats lately, so the squad sees this as the same job they've already done — just finishing it.

They lifted the World Test Championship last year and came second in the T20 World Cup. Rabada reckons the team has already proved it can get to the big stage; now it just has to cross the line.

The Proteas share the 50-over tournament with Zimbabwe and Namibia. Rabada frames it as defending their own patch, not living up to some outside expectation.
