Dayal returns to Uttar Pradesh setup after 16 months away from competitive cricket.
Uttar Pradesh fast bowler Yash Dayal has been named in the state's Ranji Trophy camp despite facing two rape allegations. The 28-year-old will train at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow from Friday.
Dayal has not played competitive cricket since the IPL 2025 final. He sought a no-objection certificate from the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association earlier this year to switch to Chhattisgarh, but the association assured him of a return to the state side.
The Allahabad High Court stayed proceedings in the Ghaziabad case in July, while the Rajasthan High Court declined interim relief in the Jaipur matter in August. Both cases remain sub judice.
CSK task Zaheer with overhauling death bowling and middle-order firepower before the 2027 auction.
Chennai Super Kings confirmed Zaheer Khan as head coach for IPL 2027 and outlined priorities that include fixing death bowling and refreshing the middle order. Owner Rupa Gurunath said Zaheer's record of nurturing talent made him the right fit.
KS Viswanathan added that Zaheer would work closely with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to strengthen the seam attack after the side conceded economy rates above 11 in the final four overs last season. The franchise also needs aggressive middle-order batters who can accelerate when Gaikwad anchors.
Zaheer said he was excited to join a franchise with such a rich history and promised to bring the same discipline he showed as a bowler to the coaching role.
Paine identifies Pujara as toughest opponent; stresses need for India acclimatisation.
Former Australia captain Tim Paine said Cheteshwar Pujara was the hardest Indian batter to dismiss during his playing days because of his concentration and discipline. Paine is currently coaching Australia A ahead of two four-day matches against India A in Puducherry starting Tuesday.
He praised the value of acclimatising young players to Indian conditions ahead of the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and highlighted Peter Handscomb's spin-playing ability. Paine also recalled Rishabh Pant's aggressive Gabba innings as an example of the mindset he wants to instil.
Australia have not won a Test series in India for more than 20 years.
Suryakumar Yadav reaffirms long-term commitment to Mumbai Indians.
Suryakumar Yadav said he'll finish ten seasons with Mumbai Indians by the time IPL 2027 ends. He called the franchise an institution that shaped his career and spoke of the tournament as a festival.
Recent reports had floated the possibility that he might drop his agency, RISE Worldwide, which has ties to the franchise owners. He didn't touch on the agency question.
He ended the 2026 season with 270 runs in 12 innings after a quiet year.
BCCI keeps options open on Agarkar’s contract extension.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said after the Annual General Meeting that office-bearers have been authorised to decide the future of the senior men’s selection committee. No announcement was made on whether Ajit Agarkar will continue beyond October.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board still has 15 days to reach a decision. If Agarkar departs, the post will be advertised and interviews conducted.
Parthiv Patel remains the leading candidate to replace him if a change is made.
Joe Root reached 23,000 international runs in his 521st innings during England's ODI against Sri Lanka, becoming the second-fastest to the milestone.
Joe Root reached 23,000 international runs during England's opening ODI against Sri Lanka in Durham on Tuesday. The England batter achieved the landmark in his 521st international innings, making him the second-fastest player to the mark. Virat Kohli remains the quickest, reaching it in 490 innings.
Root needed three runs when he walked in and completed the milestone with a boundary. He becomes the first Englishman and eighth batter overall to cross 23,000 international runs, joining Tendulkar, Kohli, Dravid, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Ponting and Kallis.
Root scored 44 from 52 balls as England posted 265 before bowling Sri Lanka out for 176. Will Jacks took 5 for 22 as England won by 89 runs. Root has 14,278 Test runs and needs 1,643 more to overtake Tendulkar's record of 15,921.
Rinku Singh wants a Test cap and believes he can play all three formats.
Rinku Singh expressed his ambition to represent India in Test cricket and move beyond the perception of being a one-format player. The middle-order batter has a strong domestic record across all formats. Rinku has scored 3,757 runs in 53 first-class matches at an average of 58.70, including nine centuries. He has also made 2,418 runs in 70 List A matches at an average of 52.56. Rinku has played 48 T20Is and two ODIs for India. He said his domestic performances demonstrate he can play all three formats at the highest level. Rinku also expressed his desire to see ODI-exclusive stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli lift the 2027 ODI World Cup title.
Sanath Jayasuriya urged India to give Vaibhav Sooryavanshi opportunities, describing the 15-year-old as the future of Indian cricket.
Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya says Vaibhav Sooryavanshi needs opportunities and room to grow. The 15-year-old hasn't played since India's T20I series against Zimbabwe, even though he scored 151 runs at 50.33 and struck match-winning knocks for India A against Sri Lanka A.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir has kept him behind Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Sooryavanshi was also left out of the one-off T20I against Japan. Jayasuriya isn't calling for instant promotion. He simply wants the door left ajar so the batter can walk through when his time comes.
Sanath Jayasuriya urged India to give Vaibhav Sooryavanshi space to develop without rushing his selection.
Sanath Jayasuriya has been around long enough to see careers break from too much too soon. The 15-year-old sat in India's squad for the T20Is against Afghanistan but never walked out, and Jayasuriya thinks that's exactly how it should stay for now.
He called Sooryavanshi a different kind of talent and said the kid still has time. No need to force him into the side; the opportunities will come when they're ready for him. Sooryavanshi's still in the squad for the Japan T20I and the Asian Games, so the door isn't closed.
Gautam Gambhir has named Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as his openers. Sooryavanshi made his India debut against England in June, but he's yet to play an innings at this level.
Jayasuriya says Sooryavanshi needs regular games to fulfil his potential.
Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya has called on India to give Vaibhav Sooryavanshi regular opportunities. The 15-year-old has not played since his debut series against England in June.
Jayasuriya told PTI that Sooryavanshi is India's future and will deliver when given space and time. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has kept the teenager on the bench for the recent T20I series against Afghanistan.
Sooryavanshi will travel to Japan with the T20I side for the Asian Games. At 15 years and 157 days, he became the youngest player to score a half-century in the Duleep Trophy earlier this month.
Rinku Singh, Mohammed Shami and Manav Suthar were not selected for India's three-match ODI series against West Indies starting on 27 September.
India named a 15-man ODI squad on 16 September for the three-match series against West Indies that begins on 27 September in Thiruvananthapuram. Shubman Gill will captain the side with KL Rahul named vice-captain after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out for the Asian Games. The series overlaps with the Asian Games in Japan, which removed several senior players from selection.
Rinku Singh last played an ODI in 2023 and was overlooked despite his experience in the lower middle order. Mohammed Shami was also omitted after modest returns in the Duleep Trophy, while left-arm spinner Manav Suthar missed out despite strong performances in Test cricket. The selectors instead handed maiden ODI call-ups to Punjab all-rounder Naman Dhir and seamer Aaqib Nabi.
Nitish Kumar Reddy was withdrawn from the Asian Games squad to strengthen the ODI group. Ravindra Jadeja returns after missing the preceding series against New Zealand.
Roston Chase urged West Indies to restrict T20 cricket for players under 23 outside the CPL to safeguard red-ball skills.
West Indies all-rounder Roston Chase said young players should limit their T20 exposure outside the Caribbean Premier League to protect their red-ball development. Speaking on a Wisden podcast, Chase said the financial rewards and fast pace of T20 cricket are drawing youngsters away from Test cricket. He argued that players under 23 should focus on red-ball cricket before expanding into white-ball formats.
Chase said the fundamentals of red-ball cricket remain essential for long-term progress. He added that building a strong technical base early gives players the foundation to express themselves later in limited-overs cricket. The comments come after West Indies completed a Test series win over Sri Lanka at home.
Chase did not name specific players but stressed that systems and coaching structures must support red-ball growth at the domestic level.
Agarkar preferred Gaikwad for Ireland captaincy; BCCI backed Bumrah instead.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar pushed for Ruturaj Gaikwad to captain the T20I side in Ireland that summer, not Jasprit Bumrah. He worried about Bumrah's workload after the long layoff. The BCCI overruled him. Bumrah led India to a 2-0 series win. That decision, according to The Telegraph, was the first real sign of friction between Agarkar and the board — friction that ran through the rest of his term. His contract ends soon and isn't being renewed.
Graeme Cremer ends an eight-year absence from ODI cricket as Zimbabwe name an unchanged batting line-up for the series finale against Australia.
Graeme Cremer will play his first ODI in eight years when Zimbabwe face Australia in the third and final match in Harare on Sunday. He replaces Brandon Mavuta, while Trevor Gwandu comes in for Tapiwa Nyamhuri.
Australia have swapped Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett for Josh Hazlewood and Billy Stanlake, who are rested. Cameron Green remains unavailable.
Cremer last played an ODI in 2018 and will share the spin duties with Sikandar Raza on a surface expected to assist turn.
Compressed schedule leads to rested stars and split coaching staff for final New Zealand ODIs.
A four-day gap between the fifth ODI and first Test against New Zealand has forced India to rest several players for the final two ODIs in Mount Maunganui. Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj won't play.
Shreyas Iyer will captain the side in those matches. Two coaches will stay with the ODI squad while the other two head early to Wellington for Test preparations.
The schedule was set without input from the team management, according to reports. The overlap affects India's 2027 ODI World Cup preparations.
Panesar questions Sooryavanshi's red-ball technique on a podcast. Clarke disagrees and backs the teenager's potential.
Former England spinner Monty Panesar says 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi lacks the technique required for Test cricket. Panesar made the comments on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast while speaking to former Australia captain Michael Clarke.
Clarke countered the assessment and cited Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers as examples of players who succeeded in all three formats. He said Sooryavanshi's technique will improve with more tours and training in different conditions.
Sooryavanshi recently played in the Duleep Trophy for East Zone and nearly scored a century in the semi-final against Central Zone. He has yet to play a Test match for India.
Reports indicate that a disagreement over Rohit Sharma's ODI future contributed to Ajit Agarkar's exit as chief selector.
A reported disagreement over Rohit Sharma's future in ODIs played a significant role in Ajit Agarkar's decision to step down as chairman of selectors, according to PTI. The selection committee had planned to move on from Sharma after the Lord's ODI against England, but the BCCI publicly backed the former captain, blindsiding Agarkar.
Agarkar also clashed with VVS Laxman over India A scheduling and the handling of injured players. Key India A matches overlapped with domestic tournaments, and an injury list of centrally contracted players was leaked to the media.
Agarkar did not attend a BCCI review meeting in Mumbai after India's series defeat to England. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the meeting was called at short notice while Agarkar was away.
Agarkar's exit followed BCCI's public defence of Rohit and disputes over India A fixtures and player management.
The BCCI's public statement supporting Rohit Sharma's ODI future effectively removed Ajit Agarkar's authority to drop senior players, according to a senior board official cited by PTI. Agarkar had agreed with the team management to move on from Rohit after the Lord's ODI, but the board reversed the decision and issued a media release without informing the selection committee.
Agarkar also clashed with VVS Laxman over India A scheduling and injury management. Key India A matches overlapped with domestic tournaments, and the Centre of Excellence did not provide recovery timelines for centrally contracted players. An injury list was later leaked to the media.
Agarkar did not attend a review meeting in Mumbai after the England series. The BCCI said the meeting was called at short notice while he was away, but several officials viewed the absence as the final break.
Ajit Agarkar is set to end his tenure as chairman of selectors after a series of disagreements with the BCCI over selection policy. Reports say the flashpoint came when the board issued a public statement supporting Rohit Sharma's ODI future without consulting the selection committee.
Agarkar had favoured moving on from the former captain after the Lord's match against England. Tensions also rose between Agarkar and BCCI Centre of Excellence chairman VVS Laxman over selection policy and fixture scheduling. Agarkar did not attend a post-England review meeting in Mumbai called at short notice.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia defended Agarkar's absence, saying the meeting was arranged while the selector was away. The move comes ahead of India's three-match ODI series against West Indies starting on September 27.
Subramaniam Badrinath supports the Impact Player rule in the IPL, contrasting with India captain Shubman Gill's criticism of the regulation.
Former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath has voiced support for the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League, stating that it makes the competition more interesting and gives an extra player an opportunity to contribute. Badrinath made 95 IPL appearances for Chennai Super Kings between 2008 and 2013.
The BCCI introduced the rule in 2023, allowing teams to substitute one player from their starting XI during matches. India captain Shubman Gill has criticised the rule, arguing that adding an extra batter makes the game more one-dimensional and reduces the skill required when wickets fall.
Gill said chasing 180 or 160 on challenging wickets is more exciting than pursuing 220 on flat surfaces. The debate over the rule's future continues ahead of IPL 2027.
