Darren Sammy sees West Indies ODI series as progress test

West Indies coach Darren Sammy views the upcoming three-match ODI series as a key test ahead of World Cup qualifiers.

India host the West Indies in a three-match ODI series beginning Sunday in Thiruvananthapuram. The series forms part of India's build-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup and comes after the Shreyas Iyer-led side returns from the Asian Games. West Indies head coach Darren Sammy views the matches as an opportunity for his side to measure their improvement ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

The ODIs will be followed by five T20Is across Lucknow, Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru between October 6 and 17. India have made several changes to their squad because several players are unavailable due to the Asian Games. Shubman Gill leads the ODI side, which includes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, while Shreyas Iyer captains the T20I team.

West Indies last won an ODI series in India in 2006. They have not won a bilateral ODI series in India for 24 years. Sammy said the tour offers his players a chance to assess their progress against the world's top-ranked side.

India bowling coach Morne Morkel said Nitish Kumar Reddy possesses the talent to compete for the all-rounder role if given consistent opportunities and a clear brief. Reddy has shown sharper pace and late movement in training ahead of the West Indies ODI series after taking six wickets in the recent T20I series against Afghanistan.

Morkel said the message to Reddy is to keep things simple and fulfil basic roles rather than trying to create opportunities in every spell. He noted that Reddy's mindset of wanting to create breakthroughs is valuable but needs to be channelled into consistent execution. Morkel added that India has time to develop Reddy as a potential replacement for the injury-prone Hardik Pandya.

Morkel also said the management is monitoring workloads for Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana, who remain sidelined, and that India has strong bench strength to cover injuries.

Hesson says Pakistan will target India if they meet at Asian Games

Pakistan coach Mike Hesson said his team will aim to pressure India if the sides meet at the Asian Games, while noting Pakistan’s rise in T20I rankings.

Pakistan coach Mike Hesson said his side will look to put India under pressure if the two teams meet at the Asian Games in Japan. Hesson described India as the current benchmark in white-ball cricket and said Pakistan has improved its T20I ranking from eighth to fifth since he took charge.

Pakistan and India are in separate groups and can only meet in the final or bronze-medal match. India have fielded a full-strength squad while Pakistan have selected mostly fringe players.

Hesson added that Pakistan has won multiple T20I series over the last 15 months and is focused on consistent performance rather than past results against India.

New Zealand coach wants to test Sooryavanshi on pace and bounce

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter wants to see how Vaibhav Sooryavanshi handles pace and bounce in the upcoming T20I series.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said he is curious to see how 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi responds to pace and bounce when India tour for a five-match T20I series beginning October 22. Walter noted that Sooryavanshi has dominated against the world’s best bowlers in the IPL but faces a different challenge on seam-friendly surfaces.

Sooryavanshi struggled in his first three senior international matches in England but scored two half-centuries in Zimbabwe. Walter said the series would test how the teenager’s aggressive game translates to different conditions and how New Zealand can bowl to him.

Walter also said he is interested in seeing how emerging players respond under pressure, adding that if Sooryavanshi is not selected, India still have other very good players.

Warwickshire lead County Championship with 11 points to spare

Warwickshire hold an 11-point lead heading into the final round of the County Championship. Olly Hannon-Dalby expressed confidence that the side will secure the title.

Warwickshire enter the final round of the 2026 County Championship 11 points clear at the top — a cushion that's hard to squander, though the last four days will test their nerve. Olly Hannon-Dalby, the medium-fast bowler who's been a fixture in the attack all season, said the squad's in the groove after training at Edgbaston. "We're favourites," he said, and the math backs him. The decisive matches begin this week.

Hannon-Dalby at 6ft 7in has been consistent throughout, and that reliability across the attack is why Warwickshire's pulled clear. BBC Sport's invited readers to pick their County Championship team of the season from 2026, a sign of how tight the racing has been. The Guardian noted Warwickshire remain the clear favourites — but clear doesn't mean coronation.

New Zealand named Mitchell Santner as captain for the five-match T20I series against India starting 22 October. Santner leads a 16-member squad that includes 13 players from the side that reached the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad in March. Adam Milne and Michael Bracewell return after missing the tournament through injury.

Rachin Ravindra has been ruled out after dislocating his right shoulder in a promotional shoot last week. Coach Rob Walter said Ravindra needs at least six weeks of rehabilitation and is expected to be available for the ODI series starting 4 November. Bevon Jacobs has been added as cover.

The squad features seven fast bowlers and is expected to face conditions that assist seam movement in October and November. The series forms part of a 12-match tour that also includes five ODIs and two Tests across four cities.

Cooper Connolly and Josh Inglis press Australia Test claims

Australia coach Andrew McDonald said Cooper Connolly and Josh Inglis could strengthen their Test recall prospects with strong performances in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. Both players impressed on the recent tour of Zimbabwe.

Connolly scored 51, 78 and 21 while taking three wickets across the three ODIs. Inglis made a run-a-ball 102 in the final match. The duo will bat at numbers three and four in next year's ODI World Cup.
