BCCI approves 30 per cent raise for domestic umpires and match referees

Domestic umpires will receive a 30 per cent fee increase after the BCCI approved a performance-based grading system at its AGM on 18 September.

The BCCI approved a 30 per cent increase in fees for domestic umpires and a revised pay structure for match referees at its 95th Annual General Meeting on 18 September. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said umpires will be graded in four categories with appointments based on performance assessments. The last major revision of domestic umpiring fees came in 2017-18.

Umpires in the top two grades currently receive Rs 40,000 per match day while those in lower grades get Rs 30,000. Match referees were paid Rs 30,000 per day after the 2017-18 restructuring before their fee was raised to Rs 40,000. The board will also introduce relegation and promotion for 10 umpires from each grade at the end of every season.

The BCCI has not finalised a similar restructuring for scorers. Saikia said the board will need more time to assess their situation. The AGM also approved grand celebrations for the IPL's 20th season in 2027 and initiated planning for BCCI centenary celebrations in 2028.

Jharkhand association rejects reports of Ranchi Test venue change

Tiwary said he has received no communication about moving the match from Ranchi.

Jharkhand State Cricket Association secretary Saurabh Tiwary has rejected reports that Ranchi could be replaced as the venue for the fourth Test of the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The match is scheduled at the JSCA Stadium from 19 to 23 February. Tiwary said no change of venue has been discussed.

Reports had suggested the BCCI was considering Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam or Rajkot because early sunsets in Ranchi during January and February could reduce playing time. Tiwary said if any letter had to be written to the BCCI on the matter, it would come from him and none has been sent. The last Test at Ranchi was played in February 2024 between India and England.

Gautam Gambhir says it is not fair on Shubman Gill to play without key players

Gambhir said the team wants Gill to have his best playing XI available as often as possible.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir said it is not fair on Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill to repeatedly play without several key players. Gill will be without Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan and Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming ODI series against West Indies due to the Asian Games. Gambhir acknowledged that missing frontline players is not ideal preparation for the 2027 World Cup.

Gambhir noted that the Asian Games squad was selected long before the conflict arose. He added that the series gives opportunities to players such as Naman Dhir and Auqib Nabi. Gill will lead a 15-man ODI squad that includes Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.

Shami and Bhuvneshwar left out of India squads for West Indies series

Shami and Bhuvneshwar omitted from India squads for West Indies series, with Aakash Chopra suggesting their international careers may be over.

Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were not selected for India's white-ball squads against West Indies. Shami last played for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy final, while Bhuvneshwar has not featured since 2021. Former India batter Aakash Chopra said the omissions signal the end of their international careers.

Chopra pointed to the emergence of younger bowlers including Auqib Nabi, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav. He said selectors are not considering the veterans despite their recent domestic and IPL performances. Shami took 28 wickets for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026, while Bhuvneshwar claimed 17 the previous season.

The squads were named on Wednesday. Shami recently completed 100 first-class matches for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy.

Lungi Ngidi ruled out of Australia ODI series with hamstring injury

Ngidi becomes the third senior pacer ruled out of the Australia ODIs after Rabada and Baartman.

Lungi Ngidi

South Africa fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Australia with a right hamstring injury. Scans confirmed the damage after Ngidi experienced discomfort during a domestic first-class match for the Titans against the Dolphins last week. The 29-year-old joins Kagiso Rabada and Ottneil Baartman on the injury list, leaving Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch as the lead pacers for the series that begins on 24 September in Durban.

Twenty-year-old Nqobani Mokoena has been added to the 16-player squad as Ngidi's replacement. Mokoena made his ODI debut earlier this year against Zimbabwe and has been withdrawn from a domestic match to join the Proteas. The decision on Ngidi's availability for the subsequent three-Test series beginning on 9 October will be made closer to the start of that campaign.

South Africa's updated squad includes Temba Bavuma as captain, with Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, David Miller, and Tristan Stubbs among the batters. The three ODIs will be played in Durban, Johannesburg, and Potchefstroom.

Hazlewood, Stanlake return as Australia make two changes for Zimbabwe ODI

Australia bring back Josh Hazlewood and Billy Stanlake for the second ODI against Zimbabwe, with Cameron Green still sidelined by a shoulder injury.

Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood and Billy Stanlake replace Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson in Australia's XI for the second ODI against Zimbabwe. Cameron Green remains unavailable due to a shoulder issue. The changes give Hazlewood valuable match practice ahead of Australia's three-Test series against South Africa next month.

Zimbabwe are unchanged from the side that lost the first ODI by 59 runs. The hosts won the toss and elected to bowl first on a fresh pitch at Harare Sports Club. Stanlake's return adds height and pace to the attack following his international comeback in June.

Hazlewood missed all of last summer's Ashes with hamstring and ankle issues. His inclusion provides Australia with a proven Test bowler who can use the conditions at Harare Sports Club before the South Africa series begins next month.

Gautam Gambhir says injury list is a problem for India

Gautam Gambhir admitted India's growing injury list is becoming a problem ahead of major series.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir said recurring injuries are proving a major concern for the team ahead of key series. Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out of the Afghanistan series and Asian Games with an abdominal strain, adding to an already stretched squad.

Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana remain unavailable, while Sai Sudharsan is recovering from a toe stress fracture. Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar have only recently returned. Gambhir warned that missing key players affects Shubman Gill's ability to field his strongest XI in both red and white-ball cricket.

The coach said the issue is particularly acute ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, where consistent selection and match practice are essential for building combinations.
