Wasim Jaffer questions Naman Dhir's ODI selection

Wasim Jaffer says Naman Dhir's List A numbers do not justify his ODI call-up and questions whether he is a Washington Sundar replacement.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has questioned Naman Dhir's inclusion in India's ODI squad for the upcoming series against the West Indies. Jaffer said Dhir's List A numbers have not been particularly impressive and wondered whether the selectors view him as a replacement for Washington Sundar.

Dhir has scored 351 runs in 14 List A matches at an average of 39.00 and a strike rate of 106.36, including four half-centuries. He has also claimed seven wickets. Jaffer noted that Dhir is a good T20 player and highlighted his 173-run knock in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League.

India play West Indies in a three-match ODI series beginning on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram. The squad includes several players who will get opportunities while senior players are at the Asian Games.

Naman Dhir earns maiden ODI call-up after domestic form

Naman Dhir and Auqib Nabi received maiden ODI call-ups for the West Indies series following strong domestic performances.

Naman Dhir received his first ODI call-up for India’s three-match series against the West Indies after scoring 655 runs in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League at a strike rate of 217.61. The 26-year-old also took the Player of the Tournament award, highlighted by an unbeaten 173 off 64 balls against Mohali Kings.

Auqib Nabi earned his maiden ODI selection alongside Dhir. Both replace players unavailable due to the Asian Games schedule. Mumbai Indians retained Dhir at the 2025 auction for Rs 5.25 crore after initially signing him for Rs 20 lakh.

Hanuma Vihari questioned the selection, saying domestic numbers outside one standout knock did not justify the call. The series begins on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kris Srikkanth questions Vipraj Nigam Asian Games selection

Srikkanth says selectors cannot hand out India caps without clear performance justification.

Former India opener Kris Srikkanth has slammed the selection committee for including all-rounder Vipraj Nigam in India's squad for the Asian Games 2026 as a replacement for injured spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. The 35-year-old suffered an injury during the first T20I against Afghanistan and was ruled out of the remaining matches and the upcoming Asian Games.

Nigam scored 142 runs at a strike rate of 180 and claimed 11 wickets in 14 matches during his debut IPL season for Delhi Capitals in 2025. His form dipped in 2026 when he featured in only five games, scoring 15 runs and taking two wickets.

Srikkanth also questioned the continued omission of Krunal Pandya, Rajat Patidar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar despite their match-winning domestic performances. He said age cannot be the only decider and questioned whether younger players have pushed the veterans out through performances.

Leicestershire hit with 27-point deduction over pitch damage

Leicestershire were deducted 27 points after their Grace Road pitch was ruled below standard during a County Championship match.

Leicestershire face the prospect of relegation after being handed a 27-point deduction over the substandard condition of their pitch. The sanction drops the county to the bottom of the Division One standings, though the club has until 29 September to appeal.

While Leicestershire defeated Glamorgan on 20 August, the match referee noted 43 instances of unpredictable bounce caused by cracks in the surface. Regulators subsequently declared the Grace Road pitch below required standards, stripping the 19 points gained from the victory and adding an eight-point penalty.

Leicestershire's head groundsman Callum Lewin argued that extreme heat of 35 degrees Celsius and a Bollywood film shoot four days before the match hampered preparations. The regulatory authority rejected the defence, stating that risk management should have envisaged the need to protect the pitch during the filming.

Leicestershire docked 27 points over poor pitch at Grace Road

Leicestershire face relegation threat after losing 27 points for a substandard Grace Road surface.

Leicestershire received a 27-point penalty for preparing a poor pitch in their County Championship match against Glamorgan at Grace Road. The Cricket Discipline Panel upheld the charge and deducted the 19 points earned from the win plus an additional eight-point deduction. The panel also imposed a £5,000 fine on the club.

Groundsman Callum Lewin cited an unscheduled Bollywood film shoot four days before the match as a mitigating factor. The panel rejected the explanation because filming lasted only one day and did not prevent pitch preparation. The penalty leaves Leicestershire on the brink of relegation from Division One with one round of matches remaining.

The club has ten days to appeal the decision. Leicestershire must beat Hampshire in their next match to stay up in Division One.
