Shreyas Iyer says Vaibhav Sooryavanshi cannot walk into India's T20I XI
Shreyas Iyer confirms Vaibhav Sooryavanshi must wait for his chance as Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson retain their places as India's preferred openers.
India T20 captain Shreyas Iyer said Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for regular opportunities because established openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson continue to perform consistently. Sooryavanshi has featured in only eight of India's 21 T20Is since his selection for the England and Ireland tour earlier this year. Iyer said the 15-year-old has more years to get opportunities and should remain happy in the dressing room.
Iyer noted that Abhishek and Samson won the T20 World Cup and are scoring consistently at the top of the order. He added that overseas exposure will help Sooryavanshi prepare for future assignments and understand different conditions. Sooryavanshi has scored 246 runs in eight T20Is at a strike rate of 186.36 with two half-centuries.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said his side has plans for Sooryavanshi if he gets to play in the five-match series starting on Thursday in Christchurch.
