Mohammed Shami retires from Test cricket after 13-year career

Mohammed Shami retires from Tests with 229 wickets in 64 matches and will focus on white-ball cricket.

Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday, ending a 13-year career that began with his debut against West Indies in 2013. The 36-year-old finished as India's sixth-highest wicket-taking fast bowler with 229 wickets in 64 Tests. He last played a Test in June 2023.

Shami thanked teammates, coaches, family, the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bengal in an emotional social media post. He described wearing the India Test jersey for the first time as a dream and reflected on every wicket, struggle, injury and comeback. The fast bowler will continue in white-ball cricket including the IPL and domestic matches.

Shami claimed six five-wicket hauls across his Test career. His retirement leaves a gap in India's red-ball pace resources heading into future series. White-ball commitments will now take precedence for the veteran.
